Hi Gang,

It was great to see many of you at Cruiser Days. Great work by those involved.

As many of you know, the Sea to Sky Highway is blocked for the long weekend due to the slide at Porteau Cove.

Milena and I want to make it to our property in Birken, just north of Pemberton.

Have any of you made the West Harrison Lake journey through to Pemberton recently or have you heard of the conditions? I have taken the route many times but heard there was a slide. Is the run clear?

Thanks,

Bruce

I the loop on July 5 (staying on the east side of the river) and the road is fine -- no washouts/etc. Yes, there's a rough section at the north end of the lake, but it's 2H/4H the whole way. I also went up to Sloquet on July 12 and one member of our group came back through Pemberton by way of the west side of the river -- I understand that road is higher grade, but all of the industrial traffic is on it (you'll see what I mean!)

I created some slight chaos on the radio (rock101) today when I phoned this route in as alternate to the alternate route via the fraser canyon, for people to get to Whistler.
People were phoning in with all sorts of frightening stories about how its 4x4 only and really treacherous.
Perhaps it is, I've never gone that far, I was just enjoying the seeds of corruption I planted :)

troublemaker!

Some guy called into JackFM as well....said he'd done it on a Quad and that it would be fine for most vehicles.

Well they where showing the route on the 11 oclock news... and plans to upgrade the road.

That's a shame, but you could see that coming as an alternate out for 2010. Probably turn into a tourist loop with stops at the already overcrowded hotsprings :frown:.

Jeff, you're brutal. :)

I also saw the piece on the news. The road is actually quite good except for the 10 km or so at the north end of Harrison Lake. And even then, there are just a few spots that are steep enough and bumpy enough to be interesting.

Its a long drive but its beautiful. The 20 mile FS campsite is one of the nicest, on a point right down on the lake. St Agnes Wells is a treasure that I hope will be kept up.

The road would be a natural if they upgraded. They said $200 million to pave and just $50 million to do a gravel upgrade. Keeping it open in the winter would be the problem, I would think. But they keep the road open at the other end, so I guess it can be done OK.

The issue for us as 4X4 nature seekers (if one can be both) is that if the road becomes heavily travelled, all those areas we now have access to would one day be blocked off. Some might argue that the access would be easier. I would argue that this would be the reason the other accesses would be closed.

Milena and I are making th etrip tomorrow morning, leaving the Sasquatch Inn area at about 9 am. The Sea to Sky may be opened by Sunday they now say. So, we would return the usual way.

have a great long weekend, gang.

Bruce

What a shame... the hotsprings are already overcrowded with teens every weekend having raves and parties, and trashing the site... the owner gave up the property to the skookumchuck band out there... last time I went up there were 40 or so teens with generators, turn tables, and mega speakers... the music lasted all day and night until the Tribal police and RCMP eventually showed up...

It's a shame that another treasure will become another easy to get to party area... the restaraunt in Mt. Currie that has awesome pizza told me every weekend vans full of teens head up that way to just get sloshed and cause trouble.

i too just did the route around but i went the long way right around to furry creek and back again , but i did it in a rig pulling a 45ft trailer .don't think the rig would of liked the short cut through harrison . went lyton to lillooet, duffy lake road. that last hill is a doozy . for anybody who has not gone on the duffy lake it was a very impressive route. even on the way home we went through cache creek ,
from lillooet to cache creek was quite impressive also . the cops wouldn't let us go from lillooet to lyton on the #12 highway on the way home.
