So I went out to take the 85 FJ60 for a spin and unfortunately for me, I have been out of town for a while and my truck hasn't been started in a while, prob like 2 months. Ran like a top when I last drove it and parked in the garage. So go out to start it and it cranks over just fine but no start. Always give 3-4 pumps on the gas and engage Choke and unit today she fires right up, but today that is not the case. So I'm like thinking do we have spark? do we have Fuel? I had a can of Starter Fluid so I spayed a little in the carb and boom she turns over and cranks up and revs for a second but then just dies out. Tried it again and again with the same result, fires up revs, and then just dies out even when giving it some gas with the foot peddle. So makes me think that with all the time of sitting for a while something has caused the Carb to malfunction. To me, it seems like it wants fuel but it's not getting it, and the initial fire-up is because of the starter fluid. I suppose it could also be the fuel pump as well. Any thoughts here???

All the best and thanks in advance for your comments and thoughts.

Fuel Filter or pump? How old is the gas?
Yeah I'm starting to think I am not getting Fuel to the Carb. I just went back down and looked at the Fuel Window on the carb and to me she looks pretty dry (see pic) but I would assume one would see fluid in there :). Gas is not that old at all as I was driving it frequently prior to it sitting for a bit. My guess is its Fuel Filter, Fuel Pump or Stuck Float on the Carb??

When mine sites for over 1 week, I need to crank for quite a while before it will start. I think the fuel evaporates or drains out and I need to refile the fuel bowl. Clearly you don't seem to be refilling the bowl. Besides the filter and pump also check that the float is not stuck closed. --I guess you check that last after you confirm your pump is delivering fuel/pressure to the carburetor.

It's either empty or completely full. It's hard to distinguish between the two. However, if full I would expect you wouldn't start up with starter fluid because the system would be "flooded". Another way to check for gas would be to remove the air cleaner/filter an manually stroke the accelerator pump. You should see gas shooting into the primary throttle bore.

She Has Gas in the fuel tank, as I never let her get to empty, and yup the Fuel Gauge in the Cluster registers 3/4 of a tank.

>Checked the Fuel Filter and it seemed to be ok but went ahead and ordered a new one (OEM) from Toyota and will pick it up tomorrow.

>Took the AirCleaner off so I have access to the Carb. There is Zero fuel in the bowl of the Carb (looking through the window) so the one main fact is, is it's not getting fuel into the carb.

>I am trying to think of how I can see if the Fuel pump is pumping fuel up to the carb. Was thinking of disconnecting the hose from the fuel pump that connects to the mainline that runs up to the carb and have my son turn over the engine to see if it is indeed pumping fuel? Curious if that would work for a test? ANYONE ever do this or have another way of testing the fuel pump without removing it completely and if I do that hell I'd just replace it. Just trying to eliminate the pieces of the puzzle here to get to the issue at hand.

>If the Fuel pump works then I move to the carb (Needle or Float) and go from there.

Thoughts?

take the plastic handle of a large screw driver and TAP TAP TAP gentle now , but with enough of a TAP-Strike to free up any internal stuck dry parts

on the top area of the Carb. air horn right above the site glass , i use this SKUNK-WORKS trick many times

on stuck needles and seats to un-stick them after prolonged dormant periods ......

, if no luck ?

then remove air cleaner , and insert the red straw of a can of carburetor cleaner into each Venturi brass bowl vent , depress nozzle and count to 5 , both vents

let this sit say ........... 5 minutes , then start the truck , feathering the throttle

do these step by steps and report back the TECH. results

if you do not understand seps 2 here let me know , i will explain differently :)

@ToyotaMatt - I am gonna need a little help here in understanding this air horn step as I'm not quite following ya.

""air horn right above the site glass , i use this SKUNK-WORKS trick many times on stuck needles and seats to un-stick them after prolonged dormant periods ......""

Care to explain a little better?

Thanks

Ok ToyotaMatt > maybe I answered my own question regarding the Air horn that you referring to (see pic attached). So if I hear ya correctly your saying give some nice firm taps on top of the Air Horn part on the carb. See diagram attached. I believe that is what you meant :) and if that doesn't work grab some Carb Cleaner and spray, let sit and start and see if that does the trick.

yes ,

plastic handle screwdriver end only NO metal on Metal contact here to be krystal klear .....

I suppose you're worried about some guy going in on with a hammer and cracking the case of the carburetor while tapping away hence using the back in of a plastic screwdriver??

yea.........

i have not determined yet if you one of those yet or not ?

so your on a short JDM leash till i say otherwise ........

Well I have her back up and running! @ToyotaMatt you trick worked like a champ! Little tap on the Air Horn, then some carb cleaner, wait 5 Min and the start. Started up an ran for a bit till I tried to give it a bit of gas then stalled out. Repeated gain and this time boom up and running and let her arm up for a bit. All good now. Not sure if moving to Florida has anything to do with it and the heat in all but I’ve never had this happen before back in KC. Anyway I think the Needle got stuck w it sitting to long but glad to have her back up and running. Ended up replacing the Airfilter as well as the Fuel Filter so a little maintenance as well. Thanks all for your comments. Luv this forum!!
