I'm interested in locking the front axle on my 85. Was going to purchase a kit, but thought welding it may be a cheaper option. I have a friend who welds excellently and could do a good job. Any downside to this?

I am spooled front and rear. I do great on the trail(east coast wet wheeling..rocks etc) however if I keep the hubs locked on the highway I cant steer much. With the TG power steering kit its better...mostly on the trail but it did not help much on the road...but I dont keep them locked anyway so its a dead issue for me. I DO need a little more control so high steer is coming( I am still factory) and if I am still not happy I will add steer assist but I dont think I will need it cause I am almost happy with its trail performance now.

Thanks guys, I'll ponder and ponder some more. It's my daily driver too, so I wanna keep the rear open, and it sounds like I'll be purchasing a detroit.

Off to florence tomorrow. I'll post some pics

My buddy has a Aussie locker up front. It was around 280 or so to his door.
I have a lock right up front...I won on ebay for 180. It does great.
My rear end is welded and a DD. why a Detroit? You will have to set up your gears again sense it replaces the carrier.....unless I am missing something. For a DD I would get a lunch box locker.
cheaper IMHO.

Only reason why they are saing get a ARB or a selectable is because the lockers are a little harder on the birfs thats all. You solve that issue by calling Bobby Long:D

yeah....take some advice and don't weld your front.

It sucks, you can't steer at all. I did this too until I could afford my front locker, and I was totally amazed how much better the steering was with a lock right "lunch box" locker.

I broke 4 birfields last year, wife got tired of my lip dragging on the floor over my broken truck, so she bought me some marfields, and with 35 SSR'S haven't had any issues since. :D

I've been Rock Crawling for about 5 year now. I have only manage to break one birf (stockers) with 36" tires.
I do have high steer and hydro assist. The guy in the first post was going on the cheap. Longs are not cheap and a Detroit isn't as well.
I think a Lunch box locker would be easier on his stock suspension....and it being his DD. I think a single day install is do able with a lunch box locker.

I am not against lunchbox lockers that is for sure
