Any other locker install requires re-setting up the gears, ie: setting the backlash.

Yeah, but don't let that scare you. It's only the backlash and can be simple. Since you are not tearing it down completely it's not bad for what you will get in return IMO.

Swapping carriers is easy IMO, compared to a complete re-gear.

It's not as bad as it sounds. And a TrueTrack might be a better choice FOR SOME anyway.

as long as you're, 1: keeping the original gears, and 2: just swapping carriers.

All you have to do is replace it EXACTLY the way you disassembled it and set the backlash. You DO NOT have to mess with setting the pinion.

For getting a "full case" locker/ LTD slip, IMO it's worth doing.

For the "pocket lockers", all you have to do in some cases is remove the spider gears. In some diffs it still requires removing the carrier. I don't recall if a Toyota mini is one or not....

Setting the backlash is not hard, as long as you have the mag base and dial indicator. It's also helpful to have the spanner for the side adjusters.

If by "pocket locker" you mean the Lock-Rite style, yes you have to pull the carrier out of the diff with the mini-truck diffs. The 4-cyl diff even requires that you remove the ring gear from the carrier, which can be a pain to put back on.

my brother welded his diff in his truck it was nuts donuts in one spot with 36's (in the rain) and fourbyed sweet. He beat his truck up till the engine died, im a little different and use my truck as a daily driver.
the locker sounds sweet but my question is do i need to dissasemble my ring and pinion to install since my gears are 4.30 not generic 4.10.

Welded diffs/Spools suck on the street...unluss you really enjoy the tires chirping every time you make a slow turn.

I daily drove my 40 with a welded rear for 2 years and loves it. I hade a lock rite in it before that and I hated it, you never knew when it was going to unload. If you weld it right you will never have to replace it.

The install depends on the locker you choose. You can do a Lock-Rite with basic tools, you just need to be very careful and thorough to put the diff back together exactly like it was.

Any other locker install requires re-setting up the gears, ie: setting the backlash.

You need to re-set the backlash when installing a LockRight as well. I'm taking the Aussie out of my rear and either welding it or going with a Spool (Plus side to a spool is you can add more gear oil which helps to cool the diff.

Here's the welded 3rd I did for a friend. Before welding in the plate on each side, I welded the pinion corners to eachohter. This will never break.

I know that Megolfer...but you have a smallblock and a short wheelbase...with the 4 banger they behave much better...not enough HP to get it riled up.
