Having recently relocated to Central Oregon I had heard individuals refer to the state as the "Republic of Oregon"---but until recently had not experienced it first hand. I showed up at the DMV with a handful of titles to rusty projects wishing to get them either titled in my name or switched to OR titles. The immediately informed me that one of their staff members would have to verify the VIN on each vehicle that I wish to title in OR. I indicated that several of the vehicles were not running or had not been registered for road use---to which they replied get them running and we will sell you a temporary tag for each vehicle so that could be brought to the closest DMV (30 miles away) for the inspection. I inquired to whether an inspection could be done at my home do to the number of vehicles that I wished to title--at which point the employee of the DMV stated the state was too cheep to offer that service. So I decide to knock three titles out of the way at once--I took my old dodge pickup, towing my trailer with a newly purchased 1967 FJ45 to the local DMV office. The gentleman inspect my dodge and trailer with no problem---get to the FJ45 and asked whether I or the previous owner stamped the numbers on the passenger frame rail! I informed the gentleman that this was a factory stamping and that both the pickups and the FJ40's had this done by the factory. The next words out of the his mouth were that this vehicle would not be able to be titled in OR do to the false VIN stamped on the frame. At which point I invited him out to see another old Toyota with the same type of stamping---also my two year old boy began to cry. Something about a crying kid will encourage things to get done quickly---needless to stay they finally did let me register the truck---but still believed the VIN on the frame not factory. So if you ever have the joy of dealing with the OR DMV remember the Monkey turned the job down you are dealing with the next in line. Here is a photo of the truck--look for it to be on the roads of Central OR.

Ya know, Biker,

That shore looks like a stolen truck!!

It's gotta be reassuring to know that your taxes pay for such outstanding civil employees.
Here in Kalifornia, we are well acquainted with the DMV Mentality and Manners. Next time, go to the next window, all the way to the end of the line, and flog yourself mercilessly, while uttering cuss words in one of the thirty-seven approved languages that appear on your official forms.

Seriously, does AAA have offices in Oregon that can in THEIR office handle vehicle transfers from your former state?
If so, do you have any relatives still in the old state that can let you use their address to register all the vehicles back there first--then get AAA to swap things over for you into Oregon. Just avoid going into their DMV altogether.

Just a thought.

PS
Can I borrow your stampers--I have a few VIN serial numbers that need special processing----
I was thinking of turning a Ferrari into a Celica to save on registration and license fees!!!

Here in MA the local police fill out a VIN verification form. You just call the cops and they come right to your house and fill out the paperwork. Oregon is beautiful but sounds like a huge PITA.

I wonder if taking in a Max Ellery's Land Cruiser Vehicle Repair Manual or Haines Manual would help? I think one of the two has a picture of the VIN on the front P.S. frame horn.

Oregon DMVs have huge variations between employee disgruntledness/cluelessness/helpfulness. I find small towns best for things like titling 50 year old trucks.

At least they didn't make you take it to the sole state police vehicle inspector in the state (Salem), and deal with accomodating his schedule.

OR actually has a form that would allow a local police officer to do the inspection--the catch is that you have to be referred by a local DMV for the form to be valid and local DMV has to pay a charge to the Police agency doing the inspection. I was told flat out that the DMV would not pay the fee to have a local Police agency come and inspect the vehicles--I even checked with the big wigs in Salem---they just puffed out their chests and made blanket statements about how things should be done in all states. Should be really interesting when I take an old Dodge power wagon down that was last title in 1966---they will probably look at the title and accuse me of making it on my typewriter! Oregon is a great place--the people just need to take back control from the power hungry government. :bang:

That is when you just leave and go to another DMV.. Seriously.. OSP usually does VIN inspections upon request by the DMV.. I found out a lot when I was sold a stolen 40..

As for your truck I knew the PO. His name was Larry (before the guy moved it back east). Long story but he passed away and eventually his widow(or his old buddy/her new spouse?) sold it.. He had a camo'd 45 that I almost purchased but it fell through.. It was in Yreka for a long time.. Good clean truck. Does it still have the DS window that doesn't open all the way? Tan diamond tuck upholstery? Aluminum diamond plate on the tailgate? Muffler tubing headache rack and a 283?

Keif --sounds close to this truck--except this truck has a Chevy 307 engine, three speed tranny and the previous owner had it for almost 9 years--originally picked it up in CA. The windows go down like they are supposed to but it does have brown diamond interior. The headache rack is a heavy tubbing that turns into bed rails. I think it broke his heart to sell the truck as he died a week after we closed the deal.

As far as the DMV-- I have two options--Bend or Redmond and I am still looking for forms of intelligence! I did see a rat outside one of the buildings--maybe should have asked it for help.

Welcome to Bend.

Having lived in Bend for over 20 years - I only went to DMV 2 times. I learned very quick, it was much, much easier to deal with Salem via phone & mail.

Makes me wonder about my 67-45 sitting in Bend waiting for me to bring it back to life.

I also discovered the DMV queen in Medford (where I live now) - thus I'm back to dealing with Salem only. The Bend DMV is horrible - always has been. Bob

Same one, I had my motor facts askew- it was 7+ years ago... DS window was broke when "Larry" owned it: weed-wacker tossed a rock and I found a window out of an early 40 and it was about a 1/2" taller than the stock one. I talked to the guy back east when he was selling on Ebay and mentioned he wasn't to healthy. He was good buddies with a mufflershop guy and he hooked him up. Unfortunately he died about a year after I met him... How's your health BTW?

Kief my health has been great--can't say the same for the last to individuals I bought Toyota's from. I had bought an FJ40 a couple of years ago and that guy died about two weeks after we closed the deal. So currently I am two for two with owners passing after the deal is closed. Do you have anything for sale?

Not right now...

Hmm, maybe selling stuff is a bad idea.... Nothing for sale right now..

Nice truck, I'm in Bend as well. I have the super noisy red FJ40 driving around town. Hope to see you around.

BTW, someone in the middle of town is doing a frame off, I saw part of the cab sitting on it yesterday...drool.

While your out and about, check the one in the showroom at the Toyota dealer, worth the trip.

Tell me about it. The owner of Dave Holt Toyota here in Bend has two recently restored FJ45's, and they are both beautiful! He swaps 'em out of the showroom every once in awhile. DROOL!

This is sorta relevent, all those in the Central Oregon area should check this local Toyota-based overland club/forum out...Linkie below. :)

why would you want to get oregon titles? do you have to change the title also? i've never had to do that before. the lemon had illinois plates for four years while i was living in colorado, driving on colorado plates.

in texas you have 30 days to change the to tx after you move here. now that being said, in most aeas you can away no change for years, but in others like westlake hills in austin , the locals warn you after about 20 days after you move there.
