I have a 1964 FJ40 with a 9/77 2f motor in it. The gauge cluster is original, including the water temp gauge. Is the original water temperature gauge compatible with the water temp sending unit on the 2f motor? If not can I install an older water temp sending unit and get an accurate reading on the old gauge?

An older sender will work totally fine. The newer sender will probably be accurate enough too.[don't take that to the bank lol} I've read here often that the factory senders and gauges are pretty inaccurate

Keep your sending unit to match with the gauge cluster, I do believe they have different resistance values throughout the years.
Accuracy? Not so much.
