Okay, I'm starting my powersteering conversion of a 1978 FJ45 and I have all of the parts that I think I will need. Anyway, I started yesterday by removing the water pump pulley and then the 1 13/16" nut on the crank shaft pulley.

The first problem I ran into is I'll need a pulley puller for the crank shaft pulley because even though the nut came off with ease, the pulley isn't moving.

- Is there a particular crank shaft pulley I'll need or can I just rent any kind from Autozone to get the job done??

Next, I went to test fit the 2-groove water pump pulley that I picked up and to my surprise, the pulley doesn't fit nor does the pulley grooves line up properly. It appears that the four holes for the bolts are further out from center than the single groove pulley I removed. Well, I'd really prefer not to have to replace the water pump if I can get a two-groove pulley that would fit what I currently have instead.

- Do I have a FJ60 2-groove pulley or a 1979 - 1984 FJ40 pulley, or should I be asking myself whether I have a 1975/76 water pump on my 78 FJ45???

Anyway, I know that it is kinda hard to get feedback if I don't have pictures, so I'll take some tonight and post the two pulleys and the water pump that I have to help solve this.

Thank you in advance.

fj60 pully would be 3 groove, beacuse of the AC.

the water pump bolt spacing sounds like its from a non fan clutch water pump, the spacing is different at least on the ones I have, ie I can't swap a FC on it.........holes don't line up.

It sounds like the double groove wp pulley you have is for the fan clutch type. If so, the center hole should be way too big too. What you will need is a 2 groove pulley from a 75 or 76 2F engine. If you cannot find one thru the board, I have one I can sell you. Hth

Another, more complicated option is to buy a 60 series Wp, fan and clutch then add an oil cooler. All are good things to do and dont cost much. A little bit o plubing and you are on you way with a much better set up.

Here is what I have...

Here are a few pictures that I took last night.

The first picture is of the water pump that is on the truck. Anyone know if this is a standard 1978 FJ40 water pump?

Next is the comparison between the current pulley (left) and the one I purchased (right).

After looking on the SOR site, it appears that the thinner of the two is designed for a water pump with the cooler on it.

Was a water pump setup with a cooler the standard for a 1978 FJ40?? I'm just wondering if either the Canadian FJ45 came with the same engine design as 1976/77 or someone performed an engine swap on me?? Or did I get bamboozled by the seller of the water pump pulley by purchasing a non-FJ40 pulley?? I'm pretty sure I asked for a 1978 FJ40 2-groove water pump pulley and now I'm just trying to figure out whether or not I have a 1978 2F motor or a 1978 2F water pump pulley.

Also, 65SWB45, I'd like to take you up on your offer for the 2-groove pulley, be more than happy to trade you if you need either one (or both) of the pulleys pictured above. Contact me offline to discuss price.

The coolant section of the 2F manual shows the exact parts in that picture and explains the difference. Just last night, Nutley was swapping the harmonic balancer for a 2 grove and went to swap the water pump pulley for a 2 grove and guess what? :D

Funny stuff...This post couldn't be any closer to what we were looking at last night. He can post pics of the puller if you need and in a couple of hours I am betting he will have the pulley figured out.

If you really want to be confused, read this post and see if your head hurts. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=272764
I read that last night a stared at the pics for way too long. My only guess is it has to be a non clutch plastic fan to work.

Okay, now that I've read the Pirate post, it seems that I have a non-clutched-fan-single-grooved-water-pump-pulley on the engine now, I mistakenly purchased a clutched-fan-double-grooved-water-pump-pully when what I really need is a non-clutched-fan-double-grooved-water-pump-pulley. AAHHH, can't get any clearer than that.

TreerootCo, please post a picture of the puller that you are using to remove the crank shaft/harmonic balancer pulley - I'd appreciate it.

So where do I go from here. I'd prefer not to have to swap out the water pump just to replace the pulley - trying to avoid the $100 solution for the $0.01 problem.

We are using a 3 prong 6" puller, nothing special, it worked great on both my engine and the donor!

I have decided that the choices are to either run 1 belt around the alternator, water pump, and crank using the original F pulley, while the other belt services just the ps pump and crank,

or have both run around the water pump.

I will prolly do the later seeing how I have the correct pump sitting right here.

Thanks Bustanutley, I'll see if Autozone has one that I can sign out. I figure that I am a few months out from getting the entire powersteering done, so if I don't come across the correct 2-groove pulley by then, then I might end up running a belt directly to the p.s. pump.
