I am trying to replace the washer pump on my 6/76 FJ40. Its titled as a 1977 and appears to have always been this way. I called a vendor (not trying to bash anyone) and gave them my build date and they said they had a replacement. What I received doesn't match what I have. I received a pump for the later reservoir that is by the passenger headlight and my reservoir is by the brake booster.

Mine:

What I received:

For some reason or another, the vendor is telling me what I received is right. That I need to disassemble the pump for the upper motor section and swap that on to my crusty dead pump. The motor case on mine is held by 3 small phillips screws and the new one is held by two bent tabs. I told them I am not interested in doing that. This should be a simple replacement.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Could the build date and the title year be part of this headache? I have found the pump that I was sent labeled elsewhere online as a variety of different years, some labelling it as far back as 1972? That does not seem right to me. I have a 1974 FJ40 as well and its washer pump matches the 6/1976 pump.

Your washer bottle is correct for your year… the pump assembly as well as entire pump is no longer available afaik

You were sent one for 78+

In picked up a cheapo from Amazon … it’s cheap… and the mount needs to be attached to your bracket but looks oem

Maybe you can disassemble yours and exchange guys… but imho its throwing money at something that may not fit

Mine had the whole metal retainer plate rust and it leaked …. I need to take appart still and see if I can repair it

Thanks guys. This is what I suspected. I knew that new replacement pumps didn’t exist for my year. I was looking for a good used pump. Maybe I need to try the one I found on eBay.

Initially they suggested I just remove the black piece with the motor from the lower white half, then just bolt the new on in place. I told them that wouldn't work as the newer white base is wider. Plus the black portion is riveted to the original white lower. Aside from the inconvenience of the back and forth trying to convince them it’s not correct, I’ll probably have to eat the cost of the pump because shipping it back is gonna be almost as much as the replacement they sent me. :(
