Heeelllppp! should I get this odd '94 w/ lockers?

grrr....
well, there is no evidence of collision. I would have it inspected anyway. Basically, just a bad paint job and a wet transmission. If the inspection checks out, am I OK at $7K with the fabled lockers? Never seen anything in this price range with lockers locally in the last 5 months...
what to do, what to do????
(and it's your fault, guys, what with all this locker talk... ;))

how much for this odd '94 w/ lockers?

I must be getting old. I literally could see the VIN stickers in my mind's eye. Off white with silver/grey letters where the fenders attach to the inner fender, on the hood's inner surface, etc. Went out in the cold garage to check, and ...... I'm losin' it.... :-[

Anyhow, this rig sounds edgy - VIN stickers or no VIN stickers :-*

Doug,
you must of been dreaming of a 96 :D

Eric, buy the truck, it's a nice little fixer upper. I'M SERIOUS! Wet sand that white paint off, I'm sure it was just sprayed on over the clear coat. Reside yourself to doing all the repairs, that way it's a nice learning experience and you'll actually be increasing it's value. Go to this guy with $6250.oo cash in hand.

umm, Eric if you don't buy it please PM me with the details. Seriously. I know someone looking and that is a v. good deal with lockers. If you can fix what ails it yourself you will be way ahead with that mileage.

I have now looked for 80's 3 times (helping people twice), and I have found repaints are common, including a couple fo colour changes. FWIW a colour change is not something you do if you are trying to hide body damage.

Dang,
short version of the story:
went to buy it, had it inspected at a Toyota dealer, suspicions confirmed, things is leaking badly at nasty spots, likely from serious neglect. Mucho $$ to fix problems.
Will have to keep looking I'm afraid.
Thanks all for input and help.
Moral of the story: if it's poorly maintained inside and outside, it's likely to be poorly maintained mechanically too... :slap:
Blah, I'm going to go get... errr... well, consoled.

Semlin: it was really bad, don't bother...

Probably a good move. I'd rather pay $8000 for one of the many cream puffs than $6500 for that thing. I absolutely do not buy the color change story, either. I spend a lot of time around a lot of dealerships, and that is a story I've heard before - it's a known "story" to use on such a vehicle. Just like when you point out overspray on weatherstripping "No, that's from the factory - they're all like that.." and when you're calling a dealership about a used vehicle they have and ask if it was owned by a smoker "Well, we can't guarantee that nobody EVER smoked in it, but it doesn't smell like smoke to me..." (translation: It reeked when we picked it up at auction last week, but we put the ozone machine in it all weekend..).

If a vehicle's been repainted, there's generally a reason for it beyond simple cosmetics. I have personally never, ever seen a privately owned vehicle that's only a few years old that's been repainted just to change the color. Could be, but...

I think you were wise to pass.

thanks for the feedback, Doug.
It did look a tad weird, the paint had a flat, vaguely orange peel rough look about it in places. But I was prepared to buy it anyway with the paint and all, considering I'd just wheel it and damage the outside anyway. But mechanically it is bad enough that the price was no longer attractive I think, and there were probably worse surprises in stock... Sounded like the sum of all you guys stories: head gasket, crank seal, oil pans, valve covers, PS pump, tires, locker, and many more.
Strangely enough, though, the paint story may well have been real considering that there was no evidence at all of collision damage.
Oh well, another little bit of knowledge gained.
The one part that's good about checking a few and asking questions here is that hopefully one reaches a point of enough knowledge that you can then make a decision fast on the spot yet safely.
But let me know of any cream puffs with lockers at $8,000 please, I'd check them out...
:)

There's another explanation for a repaint without collision damage. Many vehicles are victims of hail damage and it can range from a few minor dings that can be fixed by those paintless dent repair places to the more extreme where every window is busted and every panel has big dents every inch or two. I've seen many of these and they're mechanically sound but cosmetically trashed. Sometimes this happens to brand new vehicles on the dealer's lot.

During my search for an 80 I ran across one of those "too good to be true" prices. It was a low mileage vehicle that was $5000+ under market from a private owner. Found out it had severe hail damage at DIA. I still considered it for a trail truck but it didn't have lockers. :(

true although not much hail in the PRK. And it could also be that a car had severe cosmetic damage from parking or trail riding or whatever. Just saw an 80 with lockers that had the side paint severely scratched on both sides from hedges, garage tools, or something.
May be that they will just decide to hide it all some day on an impulse and have the whole thing repainted quickly. Who knows?
