Matt,

Check with a dealer like TRDParts4U or one of the other discount Toyota parts dealers. The last time I looked into it, you could get the complete 4.10 geared, locked third member for around $800 or something like that. Not sure how much cheaper you will find a used setup with unknown mileage and/or abuse.

Jack

P.S., I hope my remembered amount isn't too far off.:o

I think I'll only go with a used diff if it's within a reasonable distance so I can see what shape it's in. If that doesn't happen, then I'll go with this...

I'm gonna look for a Rover axle at the junk yards in town so I can build the axle in my garage, then swap out the old with the new.

Beefy toy 30 splines sound so nice! :bounce:

as a former RRC owner, I wonder why don't the LR folks simply use the complete 80 front and rear axle housings and do away with converting/splines/etc headache?

Just curious.

It's probably cheaper and easier this way.... There's a kit that you can use to convert to the toy setup, so all i need is the diff. Seems simple enough to me, that way I don't have to worry about brackets and what not for the toyota axle.

I went down to talk to some friends at the dealership and it turns out one of the guys there has a rear axle from a 97 tacoma. He said he bought it for 3 or 400 and he would sell me the diff for $600

I'm just wondering if I should risk buying used parts at all?

Wow, that doesn't sound like too much of a deal to me. I understand the guy making a profit, but that seems a bit much for something when he bought the entire axle for 3 or 400, but is willing to sell you the 3rd for $600 (such a deal). I would look around some more. How much is Airport Auto Wrecking quoting you. They are usually high. Also I would call the 2 or 3 Toyota yards on the Sacramento area to see what they have.

Or you could do the sweet 80 series axel swap , in the form of swapping the disco for an 80:idea:

Sorrry man I just have to be a smart a$$ because I have nothing of value to add to the thread.

But I heard its really an easy swap :D:D

Or you could have my sweet 80 series and still do the toy swap to the disco:idea:

Sorrry man I just have to be a smart a$$ because I have no love for my 80, thus no value to add to the thread.

But I heard my wife say its really a good idea :D:D

i fixed it for yah, ken.

:grinpimp:

So I think i'm gonna pass on the diff I mentioned earlier. I haven't looked at it, but a '97 with only 30k? That just sounds weird... A diff that's almost 12 years old and it only has 30k on it, I highly doubt that...

I called TAP in Rancho Cordova and the guy said $425 for the diff with e locker, but I don't get to see it or anything before I buy it. He sounded like an ass too, trying to get me to buy one right there over the phone, and when I told him i would call back he got all defensive.

Ya the guys at TAP are totally LAME!
I just purchased a Taco ds from a smaller Toyota place in rancho and had a good experence.

I will see if I can dig the # up
btw IM 45 min from Rancho
