I drive 80+ miles a day 4 days a week in brutal LA traffic, I burn $75 bucks on fuel every 4 days, got tired of it. Last night, I spent $3000 to improve my mpg for the long commute to work and back. I currently get 55-60mpg, I came from LAX back to Santa Ana and the fuel needle didn't even budge. How???????????
I did it with this!!!! 2012 Honda CBR 250 with 258 miles on it now, factory stickers were still on the bike, it barely left the guys garage and I got it at a steal. :D:D:D:D

Nice score.

That's one way - I bought a 2013 Prius. Obviously more expensive, but 0% financing for 5 years and, IMHO, a lot safer...perhaps not as fun...but safer, and I can put my golf clubs in the back!

did the same thing camry hybrid, 40mpg and hauls the kids...transportation module.. boring but at 4$ a gallon what do you do...

i rode it to work today, the 5 freeway @ 6:30-7am is horrible even on a bike, it got even worse when I got the the 10 and 60 merge in downtown LA. Thought I could be slick on my bike but boy was I wrong, I managed to weave through a lot of it but so many semi trucks in the way. I will stick to my old route, it's 10 miles longer but it's a lot less stress.

@ Brent, I saw a prius got blown over by a semi truck doing 60mpg, I don't know how much safer you think your fancy Prius is :D haha, JK, I'm just jealous, I wish I could afford a Prius but this is all I can work with for now.

@ Napster, I swear I considered the geo metro, I spent a few hours looking for a good one but I couldn't find anything that wasn't dinged up. The plan was to spend around $1000 on an older honda or Geo, if it takes a s*** dive, I can always retire it through BAR like I did to my Civic, I got $1500 for my beat up, vandalized civic. It got rear ended in August, wheels stolen 5 weeks ago, windshield and driver window smashed then it got towed for "abandonment". But in the end, I got more than what I could have sold it for so the bitterness in my mouth isn't so bitter anymore. Good old Santa Ana... now I park Land Cruiser in the garage and squeezed the bike in there as well.

X2 on the Prius thang. I drive to garden grove from San Juan Cap eeerrrday. OG owner since '06. Fuel. Oil change. Wash every 3 months. Repeat. 100k. Drives buttery still. Ridic!!!! SoCal love. Careful man. Last time there was gnarly traffic on 5 north. It was a parking lot. Moto down in the middle of frwy. Scary stuff. I would rather pay a ill' more on gas and know that I get to enjoy the important things in life another day: family, friends, and of course my 80 :)

Well. My 80 is not working properly right now. But y'all know what I mean:)

I retired my civic so I had to drive the Land Cruiser to work for 2 months now, I love driving it but the commute is pretty long for 4 days a week. I calculated gas for the year on the land cruiser, came out to ~$4500 in gas and that's just to work and back, no gym, no misc errands, or groceries. The up side to driving the cruiser, I get to sleep in the back if I lay diagonally :D some foam padding and my sleeping bag.
I thought purchasing the bike made more sense on mpg and carpool lane access is a PHAT bonus!!!

All I can say is be careful lane splitting. I did as little as I could back in the day...early 80's is all you need to know. :p Traffic wasn't nearly as horrific as it is today. Dangerous at best. Drivers just don't see or care about you. Some will move over IF they see you, but most won't even see you.

From what I recall, CHP recommends not lane splitting at all once traffic is moving at something like 10mph.

MPG savings is great...so long as you are alive to enjoy it!

Nice score on the bike, just watch out for dump trucks. ;)

About 5 years ago when gas was $5/gal I was commuting to Santa Ana from Mission Viejo in the 80 and was spending stupid $ for gas. I bought a 93 Corolla wagon for $2000 (I pretended it was a 1/4 scale 80 :steer:) and with 258k on the clock it got 30mpg on the tank. I paid for it in gas savings in 10 months, drove it another 2 years and sold it for $2100. Out of 26 cars/motorcycles I have owned, it was the first I have ever sold for a profit! I could have left the keys in it an walked away and still been ahead. Amazing thing is I sold it in 2 hours and had two guys in my driveway fighting over it! Nowhere near the enjoyment of riding a bike though.

Ride safe and enjoy brother!
