I am in the process of building my new garage (blockwork done, pics soon). I will be using a 16'x8' door.

My question: what should I have for a wall height to have the door function its best? I was planning on 10' total (8" of block, double sill plate, double top plate= 6", so 8'-10" studs).

I would like to have the tracks as close to the ceiling as possible and am planning on using a Liftmaster 3800.

Any input would be appreciated.

I can't tell you what the minimum height should be, but I'd rather have a taller ceiling than lower. I would not consider mounting issues with the garage door opener to be a show stopper. I'm sure you could easily fab up mounts if you had a taller ceiling.

I'd go with a minimum ceiling height of 10 feet. This will allow you to have to room to store stuff hanging from the ceiling if needed and you don't feel closed in when you're working. Also, heat rises up. Don't want to be in the hot air.

You could look up the door install instructions online, they will tell you what the clearance needs to be. I believe they are 7 or 9 inches, but there's no reason to rely on my bad memory. 2 feet is definitely enough, and there's no reason to lower your entire ceiling so the door is closer to it, so if you like the 10 foot ceiling go with that. I can't imagine you ever looking at it later and wishing it was lower.

the wall height is determined by the span across the opening for the door....2'-0" should be enough, it depends what you are using for the door header and how you are going to resolve how the roof ties into it...

Higher the better for the ceiling for usability of the garage. Door tracks and opener just hang from the ceiling.

Installation of door and opener are relatively easy. Advice I received was to leave the horizontal track on the door loose and then use the installed door to properly locate track before fully mounting.

12 inches in standard minimum head room for a garage door. But as others have stated more in not a bad thing, I have 10' walls and wish they were 12'
