We've had ours stuffed in there for years, it's a great spot but you need to do the hinge flip modification so that the lid opens to either side (usually the inside unless you have flip windows. 
) since with the way the body tips in there is not enough room to open the lid with the factory hinges.
If you have carpet is sits pretty nicely, it can rock a little with no carpet but in the low-tech 1 banana department you can take a rubber mallet and "clearance" the inner fender a bit from the inside and they will sit nice and flat.
