Went to look at an '85 4Runner today and the interior and exterior was in excellent shape. However, the tranny made a "howling" noise in all gears 'cept for 4th. At idle when pushing in the clutch pedal the noise goes away. Does this sound like the tranny needs a rebuild or just a bad clutch throwout bearing?

4th is the straight through shaft. All other gears need the other shafts turning. Gears could be warn bad. Likely ran out of lube at some point. Properly lubed it should go over 500k miles.

BTW: it isn't that hard to swap a replacement in. Martin Crawler sells rebuilts.

Sounds like the needle bearings between the input and output shafts are toast. Not very easy to get out as you have to take half of the trans apart to get to them... It'll probably go a long time like that without dieing, but if it dies it'll be spectacular... Get a rebuilt trans and forget about it!
