W56 reverse restrict pin

In the FSM for a w56 trans, in the transfer adapter, it refers to a "reverse restrict pin". It has a spring loaded lever on it that interfaces with the shift rod. What is the function of the reverse restrict pin?

Its the thing in the bottom right of the housing pictured.

The purpose is to let you block out reverse after a forward gear is selected so that you cannot accidentally select reverse while rolling.
