In LA area for the week And would like someplace to break away from the pavement. A little hiking or camping or snow would be a plus. Something not too far away, let's say within an 2 hour drive from the 605/60 freeways.

Josh, welcome to Sunny So Cal...depending on what kind of trip you are looking for there are several options, here are Two.
1. A nice Day trip up to Silverwood Lake, just off the 215 is some nice easy wheeling (about 1 hr from you)
2. Also a potential Day trip but better served as a 1 nighter is a drive up to Big Bear and the John Bull trail. Plenty of wheeling (i think the trail is open w/ snow), and lots of hiking as well.

Enjoy

Thanks for the suggestions, I will look them up. Anybody free to come with us on thursday would be very welcome!

The pics from big bear trail look good. How long does it take? it seems long enough that two rigs would be better in case s*** happens or is it pretty mild?
Thanks

well, that trip, with 29 rigs, plus stop for lunch and several other, from Big Bear to Johnson Valley was from 9:00 to 4ish...

the trip that I did myself on Monday, I left home like 7:30 ish, I was having breakfast at Big Bear like 10, wheel for few hours, stop for a coffe at Starbucks at 3:00 or, so, drove home, and have sunset and dinner at Beach at Laguna Beach... not bad at all, for the same day....

How about we do it again on thursday!?

I would highly advise against John Bull in the snow unless you have a serious rig. Try Gold Mountain trail in Big Bear first. If you get through that with no problems then hit up John Bull around the corner. Expect it to be icey. I'd do cleghorn trail by silverwood lake. It's alot closer and there are easy bypasses for everything.

tempting, but I already have commitments with the More Race at Barstow, registration on Friday and all stuff related... can't ake three days off during the same week :(

use 38 or 18 to get there, I used the 38, the next couple of exits after 330...

get there, go to visitor center, north shore, and ask ranger for fun/easy trails based on your rig set-up...

golden mountain is fine...
holcomb valley road is fine...

there are pkenty of trails there...

Trip report:

We decided on Cleghorn trail due to close vicinity and bypasses if needed. We had a great trip, the weather was Be-A_utiful! Of course you socal'ers are used to it :flipoff2: So here a few pics and vids we took on the trip...thanks again for the suggestions.
