Hello everyone,

I am planning to take my Cruiser and do an overland / camp on the upper Pecos State Park, Elk mountain area this coming week, any advice on the area will be appreciated.

I have never been to this part of north New Mexico, I always go to the Carson National Forest area, I'm excited to check it out.

I have no help but would love a trip report as I always want to go to that area as well. I tend to spend my time in the Jemez and up towards Taos when we go up there.

Great area to explore. Elk Mountain has dispersed camping everywhere and fishing in the pecos river is pretty good right now. Iron Gate campground offers good trails into the Pecos wilderness if your into hiking. I would also suggest exploring the cow creek area which is northeast out of Pecos on NM223.

Lots of hiking, great fishing, plenty to explore and nice campspots all throughout the area.
Worth the exploration!
Nice views from the top of Elk Mountain, the highest public road in New Mexico at 11,600ft! Can be pretty muddy and rutty, just depends on the weather. Maybe challenging to take a trailer up higher than campgrounds, just depends again on ruts and weather. We have not been up since 2020 but it was a fun adventure!

Have fun exploring and safe and happy trails!

We've been getting hammered with rain last couple of nights so that might impact your exploration on that area. Enjoy!

And more rain coming this week!
Watch the forecast…

Is that an actual Japanese fire truck? Interesting rig - looks like a modified FJ62, or at least the Japanese equivalent? Is it right-hand drive?

Yes, its a FJ62 retired fire truck. imported it directly from Japan a few years ago.
I modified it to be an overland vehicle, it has been allot of fun driving this Cruiser around.
