VHF/UHF radios & programming? (1 Viewer)

My '88 FJ62 came with VHF/UHF radios installed - Kenwood TK-780/880's. Original owner was Fire Marshall/Chief of Camano Island. It's programmed with channels for that area. I got the programming cable and software on Amazon. I'm hoping to program it and monitor SAR/Ski Patrol/Police/Fire/DoT/etc. for my area. I'm pretty technical but don't have radio experience. Any suggestions or guidance on programming this and setting it up?

Some jurisdictions have restrictions on what you want to do. That being said, I would think most of these services have sub-audible tones transmitted with the signal needed to open the system. I'm thinking for receive only you wouldn't need them. I am not familiar with those radios so I have no more I can offer.

I wouldn't do it. You won't be talking to those guys on that radio anyway. Get your amateur license, and use an amateur radio. Details at arrl.org
