what do you think of this modification they do on the rear of the cruisers??? this fj40 has fj60 leaf springs underneath with this modification.

you will need a longer shackle that will tend to go to the sides, i really don't know the real reason of this mod but its very popular

maybe they are trying to reduce the length of the shackle...

i'm restoring mine (this one is a friends) and i'm planning to add fj60 leaf springs too but this is the only way I know to do it

does someone on MUD know another way?

If it's made from thicker material with bigger bushings and pins this is not a huge concern. The front of the spring is fixed and it will not easily twist. Longer shackles are often welded in the middle to help stop this as well.

My guess is that they are taking readily available material (square tubing) and using it to lift the rear to overcome sagging springs without spending any money.

Head over to the hardcore forum and read the chicago thread.

I'm using fj62 springs in the rear of my 40 too, but I'm not far enough along to bother with pictures of it. Soon.

Horrible. If you want to lift it, use longer springs and curve them, that is easy to do in Venezuela. If changing springs is not in your near future, use longer shackles but please, don't modify your frame like that.

is there a way to installa fj60 leafs on the fj40 without moving everything (like on the chicago thread) , i want to move only the rear hangers on the rear and the rear on the front. what are my options?

Hi All:

If you install rear 60 Series leaf springs under the rear of a 40 Series the rear axle will be moved rearward, there is no way around that, short of re-locating the front (fixed) spring hanger farther forward on the frame.

Regards,

Alan

i'm ok woth my axle being moved rearwards the thing is ....what happens with my rear shackle mount? should i move it rearwards also?

Hi All:

Well, you can leave the rear shackle hanger in the stock location and use loong-ass rear shackles or "flip" the rear shackle hangers 180 degrees to allow the use of shorter-length rear shackles.

I have been using the loong rear shackles (like 7 inches/175mm pin-to-pin) for awhile but plan on flipping-around the rear shackle hanger so I can go back to using shorter rear shackles.

Good luck!

Alan

I'm test-fitting that combo on one side now. I don't have my bushings yet, but with 5.5" shackles the shackle is almost completely flat. The bushings are going to bring it down some, but I don't feel like it's going to be enough so that I don't need to move the hanger.

7" is crazy. I'm surprised you have enough slip in the driveshaft to make that work.
