I purchased my dream car last year (2018 double cab 79 series with the 1VD) I imported it second hand to Tanzania, received it non starting from the port due to someone having swapped the positive and negative on the battery while trying to jump start it. somehow this made it passed the fuses and burnt out the ECU and fuel control unit. Having replaced those it ran for about 550km then went into limp mode. I then sent it up to a garage that was more experienced working on these engines and they managed to clear the issues but seized the engine when doing a Rev test. They couldn't give me an explanation on any of it, a few days later they called saying the engine had released and was now starting but sounds very rough. No more work was done to it since November and so I have now taken the car away and am looking at putting a 1HDFTE into it as we just don't have the expertise to fix the 1VD in country. I was hoping someone out there has done this conversion before or could walk me through the main difficulties. My understanding is that the bell housing will have to be changed but that the top shaft is the same and so should bolt straight on. I am more concerned about the wiring of the car and what that would entail.
I will mention that the engine was fitted with a G Turbo power pack with PDI front mounted intercooler, twin 3" torqit exhaust, aftermarket airbox and 4" intakes from the airbox.
