Guys-

I recently purchased a 74' FJ40 with a 38/38 weber and Pertronix ignition. I am assuming the distributor is the original vacuum retard. Currently, the vacuum port on the distributor is not hooked to the carb.

It is my understanding that vacuum advance hooks up to the carb, while vacuum retard pulled vacuum from the air cleaner? Either way, I'm trying to figure out if I can just cap the port at the distributor, or does it need to be hooked up?

As far as drivability, there's old nasty fuel in the tank and the carb is leaking at the adapters. Waiting on parts for that to see if any other tuning needs to be done. Thanks for the help!

my 2f runs well w/o vacuum advance...

I have a factory advance dizzy with a Vac block off plate on my 40. works great still. Although I may be missing out a bit on mileage..

Vac retard doesn't get connected to anything (or can be vented to air cleaner)

Post a pic of the dissy and it can be identified. There's a chance that a PO did the package deal and swapped carb & dissy.

Hi Jim,
heard you mention vacuum retard before, are there advantages over vacuum advance and if so can it be used with a pertronix and is it a worthwhile consideration for my 69 with a too stupid to die F motor? It is running good so I may want to not mess with it. Or maybe a little tutorial without my hijacking this post please.

If you already have vac advance there is no reason to go to a retard system.

Don't ever go full retard..

^ What he said. ^

Vac retard is useless for us. Leave it disconnected and run the dissy as mechanical advance only. Retard dissy has a lot of mechanical advance, so they work OK in this configuration.

My '78 dizzy has vac ports for both advance and retard.......plugged off the retard connection, only running advance connection to the carb. Hey Jim I am getting ready to hook up the OEM carb you rebuilt for me.......may need help with where everyting connects for a desmogged rig.

vac retard.. looks good the way it is..

deliverance I thought if there was only one connection it would be advance, no?

Nope, vac advance the diaphram is on the other side of the dizzy. Towards the front of the motor.
