The head gasket issue that the V6 experienced in around 89-9? did Toyota improve the gasket or does the OEM HG still have issues and if so is there a better replacement out there.

As far as I know they did make improvements and the new gasekts are not as prone to failure. From what I have read it all had to do with them stopping using asbestos in the HG and for several years, early 90s, they hadn't come up with a good replacement.

The newer gaskets seem to do much better. I have an 88 that has 21x,xxx miles on it and I think the Original HG, it would probably still be running if the PO hadn't thrown a rod. You also don't hear alot of trouble from the 94-95 model years.

The other contributing factor to the HG failure is the poor design of the exhaust manifolds, the passenger bank dumps right in on the #6 cylider so many of the failures that you read about are on #6. Burnt valves are also a problem there, but that is a different topic.

Well said...

There have been multiple revisions of the design of the gaskets themselves. I believe there are some other issues there life jynx says. If there was ONE part on the entire truck that I would NEVER use an aftermarket part, its the head gasket. The amount of time it takes to replace and the fact that they are already prone to failure just cements that even more.

Yup

I had my HG done when my 93 truck started loosing coolant around 85k,i have 245k at this time and still holding strong.my advice is use the red coolant to keep your cooling system in check.:)
