Just wanted to mention the obvious... from a financial standpoint, a 3-5 year used 100 is a way better value than a brand new FJ cruiser. In 3 years, the 100 will have lost little resale value compared to the FJ.

I hear you but that is a big leap, with gas prices going the way they are you might not be able to give the LC away in 3 years and the FJ could be hot property.

I disagree about the FJ losing its value and agree about the LC being a great value.

My LC lost 60% of its value in 4 years (which is how I could afford to own it) while my Tacoma lost 25% of its value in 3 years. My parents 4runner was worth 95% after 1 year.

These UZJ100's are the single best value in the Toyota 4x4 market for sure, but the other Toyota's really hold their value.

If your gonna travel long distances in cold weather, I would think you would want the most enclosed space to protect your cargo. That leads me to the conclusion that a 100 would favor your requirements. Just my nickel of advice. :)

You bring up another good point. Alaska....where this guys at. No question the 100 is more durable than an FJ/4R/Taco/GX, etc. Capability is one thing. Durability is another.

If any trips over 2 hours are involved, I highly recommend the 100. I had an 03 4Runner and it is great for short trips, but the 100 is better on the long ones. Both are great vehicles that perform well. The 100 will do better in widely varied use.

That is true. we have a 2004 4runner and the LC. The luxury and seating postion is unsurpased in the LC. My wife likes her 4runner but she is 5'3" so that makes a big difference.

I couldn't agree more. This thing is built like a tank and very comfortable. You really can't beat the UZJ100 as an all around passenger/trail vehicle. Sometimes I miss certain things about my Tacoma but overall the LC is MUCH nicer.

It gives up a little on the trail and if you are afraid of paint scratchs then stay clear of narrow and tight "jeep" tracks.

Tons of wide open spaces, ice, snow, rain, washboard roads, etc. that the UZJ100 platform will accel in. This brings up another point, the 00+ has the TRAC system which would be good for snow/ice situations.

I was volunteering yesterday at the Toyota 4x4 track at the Toronto auto show. I drove the FJ, Taco, Tundra and 4R over the track. I drove the FJ for about 2-3 hours.

The 4R was a bit disappointing. I'm not that tall (6ft), but was hitting my head on the sun roof. The Taco and Tundra drove nice but pretty rough.

The FJ was great on the bumpy parts of the track. Super smooth, and absolute no cabin noise from the engine or rattles. A fun vehicle to drive. Backing up requires some practice: because of the large pillar and the small windows it is very hard to see what is happening behind you. The FJ is great if you have a family of two, or small kids. In my case I like the LC because it is easier to acces the baby seat through the large door.

If I had the money, garage space and was in need for a new vehicle I would certainly consider an FJ. However the roomy LC still has my preference.
