Hello,

Does the GX460 (2013) have a full spare? I have a slightly bent wheel and instead of repairing or replacing it, I was thinking of just swapping it with the spare?

I have read the spare has TPMS, has anyone does this and is it a full spare? TIA!

Yes it’s a full-sized spare, complete with a TPMS sensor.
Make sure it’s adequately inflated before hitting pavement.

EDIT…just noticed you are referencing 460…I answered as a 470 owner.
But I still *think* yours has a full size spare.

Yes

Put on your spare, then look for a used wheel to replace the bent one. Unless you plan on replacing the wheels. You can take your time finding a wheel when you don't need it. When you have two damaged wheels it becomes a real problem.

Personally, I like to know I have a good spare.

As mentioned above, yes, on several levels:
  • You have a full size spare,
  • It should be a matching rim, not a steelie. (This needs a fact check)
  • The spare will have TPMS.
If I'm not mistaken, I believe some people rotate out all 5 wheels/tires when it's time to rotate tires.

If it is a steelie, maybe upgrade to some Icon or Method 17" wheels? The tires should be cheaper for 17's the the factory 18" wheels.

Thanks all! Exactly, been looking for a good wheel tire combo, given the agate pearl color, considering the black trd 17”. At this point I have about 10k-15k miles left in the thread, so this will extend it. I have been driving around on the bent wheel so it’ll be perfect as a spare.

I do… makes your tires last 20% longer.
But then when it’s time to replace, you buy 5 instead of 4, spending 25% more $$.
Not necessarily false-economy, but certainly not the savings that your numbers suggest.

I guess it saves one trip to the tire shop over the life of the car. 150-200k miles :)

Maybe more rotations so offset !? Confusing..

I’d rather use the spare as a spare and leave an old tire on there … it’s temporary anyways (spare)

You do you… was talking about longevity… never said anything about saving money.

The spare tire equipped on the vehicle is not temporary. Owners manual specifies five tire rotation.

My only issue with not rotating ALL my 5 of my tires is when I went to these new 35" (315/70R17) tires from my previous 285/75R17's was that I had to toss a perfectly good tire that had zero miles on it. I asked if anybody wanted here for cheap, but all I heard were crickets.

Yeah… Eventually it’ll go unused if you ever upsize or move on from the vehicle. Maybe you could sell it… maybe not. My attitude is if you got it, use it… who knows what the future holds.

I run 5 matching TRD wheels, 5 matching Wildpeaks and rotate them all for no other reason than pulling out a crusty, dried out spare with dents on the sidewall from being pressed against the frame for years doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.

It keeps the spare fresh and that’s worth it. Plus if I can go an extra 10k miles without a trip to deal with the morons at the tire shop… bonus!

Another thing to consider is that tires do have a shelf life of ~10 years. That includes your spare tire. If your spare has been sitting around unused, its quality may be questionable when you need it. That's one reason why I do a 5-tire rotation.

Does the rotation shop know how to take out the spare? These are all good points

The big box shop I went to knew how to remove and replace my spare. I assume it is pretty standard, as they already had a tool to lower and raise the tire.

If you do a 5-tire rotation, I would confirm with your shop that they do the same rotation you want.

Good point that people don't realize that tires deteriorate. My spare was only on for about 3 or 4 years.
But again, even a very old spare is better than none when the need comes!
