Use cosmoline (rp342) if you want a permanent dry solution
I had to clean that stuff off a stack of drill rifles about 30 years ago. The thought of having that smell on my car turns my stomach. I'll take the mess.
 
cosmoline on an undercarriage?!?! that would smell horrible! and start to become soft/oily with heat build up
 
When applying these kinds of coatings is there anything in the undercarriage that should be avoided or masked off?

Nah. Porsche used it at the factory and the stuff is seriously durable. Ive still got a ton of it on my 24 year old 911 that is protecting the transmission and engine case.
