Question for those who have imported a troopy, or any other car for that matter.

I am currently importing a troopy from OZ, it actually just landed in Long Beach this morning. Broker emailed me and said your vehicle has been flagged for, "intensive exam". I called her after I got the email and asked what happens next. Supposedly the vehicle has to be trucked to Carson, CA to the nearest examing location, in which it will spend the next 1 to 5 days. Unfortunetly the broker could not tell me what is going to happen since they have never seen a vehicle get flagged for this?

Just curious if anyone has seen this and what happens? I just have this gut feeling of someone who just got there inspection merit badge going to town on my troopy?

Thanks, Matt

Nothing happens. You just wait an extra week or two. I've imported dozens of trucks and this happens about 10% of the time. More of an annoyance than anything. If the truck is over 25 years old and has the correct paperwork, you're set.

if you dont mind me asking, what broker did you go with and how much are they charging you for the dealings of the importation?

I feel confident my paperwork is in order, so I don't believe that will be a problem.

I guess I will find out in a few days if it is or not?

I used KWE, dealing with Nancy Bonani at there Los Angeles office, very nice lady, $245 total. There was a laundry list of forms I had to fill out, and they take care of the rest. With this intensive exam, I'm sure I will end up spending some more.

All 5 troopies I brought in through Nancy and all were flagged for intensive. Exam didn't take any time, but sometimes a few days to schedule. Kept expecting a hefty inspection fee, but never saw one. She was a pleasure to deal with and her staff were very responsive, too. Sometimes didn't get clearance until I only had a couple free days left. I was given the impression that if you didn't get your junk off the dock within the few days they grant you that it is very expensive, but it was on the order of a few bucks a day, at least for the first few days, if the carrier isn't there right away.

Let us know how it goes.

I wonder what's involved in an intensive exam? I'm kinda surprised my HJ45 wasn't flagged for an intensive exam when I brought it in through Baltimore. When it arrived there were active wasp nests still in-tact under the fenders. It was RORO, amazing that the critters survived from AU.

Got your seats delivered but i didnt get to meet Todd ( Bummer )

Rob,

Thanks for doing that, greatly appreciated...and also the little side trip!!! I figuring taking a pic of the ship, let alone my troopy may be a long shot. There is a website I was able to watch the ship my troopy came across on in live time, fun to watch. It actually only was in the L.A. port for about 12 hours and it left, so not a lot of time for photo op's.

No worries, I have a pic or 2 off that site of the tub it was shipped on, just a little boat with 13 decks designed to carry 6,400 cars? :)

That's a Nissan Patrol! It ain't no troopy.

Geez, Charles.
Talk about "small screen and old eyes." Just look hard at that photo with the teeny Troopy.
It's what we Yanks fear most:
When you venture below the Equator you enter the Bizarro World--where clocks run back-asswards, and folks drive on the WRONG side of the street !!

The small screen and old eyes was me. Wasn't sure if it was on a trailer. Using a netbook and my own eyes:rolleyes:
