Well - ? What's the status ?

I kinda ran out of gas (pun) and enthusiasm for it after I put the carb back on and it ran even worse than before. :crybaby: If I had half an idea what was wrong then I would have kept at it, but I was pretty much clueless so I put it on hold. :bang:

But... I'm about to get some year-end $$$, so I'm getting ready to call K&H and ask them to take a whack at it. I'm hoping to have it back on the road in the next few weeks.

Oh, and 8660 -- start your own thread! This one is about MY carb rebuild! :flipoff2:

When I first saw this thread title, I thought you were rebuilding your carb for only $2.00. :)
Good thread with lots of info. I'll be reading back on all the Q&A's when I start my rebuild.

I hope you don't mind me adding another 'not specifically related to your build, but may help others' question.

Where is the best place to get a kit?
I have an '82 60 with stock carb. What's the correct kit for it?

Thanks,

K&H does good work and they know cruisers very well, but they'll just swap out your carb for a generic rebuild - they're not gonna spend the time to try and figure out what's wrong; it's not worth it for them - and can you blame them?

They'll just get a rebuild from the same place SOR has their cores rebuilt (Canoga Carburetor & Fuel Injection) and you'll have to kiss your shinny core go'bye ...

For the same money (actually less 'cuz K&H will charge for the R&R), you should get yours to Mark Algazy or PM FJ40Jim (poster in this thread) for shipping info. You'll get a much better rebuild for less money.

Ah, sorry - reply was to the OP, Two Buck.

For carb kits contact Kurt at cruiseroutfitters.com. FJ40Jim may sell them, too, but don't quote me on that. NAPA as well.

Hertzogg - You may want to check your secondary diaphragm before you order your carb kit. If you need a new one, you'll need to order it in addition to the kit. I've just learned that lesson.

Called Kurt yesterday. Ordered both the standard kit and the diaphragms. I want to do this once, the right way.

Don't forget "Carb Dip" or a ultrasonic cleaner for parts not replaced.

A friend gave me an ultrasonic bath from a lab building he was decommissioning. I have not used it on carb parts yet, but it has worked well on other car and bike parts. If nothing else it really cuts down on the amount of scrubbing involved. I drop the parts in the bath and come back in a couple of hours and basically just rinse them off. I've been using a water based solvent like simple green. With carbs you should make sure the solvent is compatible with aluminum.

What they do better than anything is get the little passage ways clear from build up. A short time in a 25% simple green will not hurt the aluminum, however a table spoon of Dawn Dish washing detergent will work well. Does yours heat the solution ??

Thanks for the dawn tip. I'll try that.

Mine is made by Bransonic but badged fisher scientific. It just has one switch for "on" and according to the vendor website it only does "ultrasonic", no heat. however, the solution does get warm after a while.

My wife works in a dental office and they use ultrasonic cleaners for some of their equipment.
I wonder if I could sneak in there one weekend to clean the carb.

Think the patients would get a 'gummed' taste in their mouth afterward? <= Pun intended

The End

I figured I'd post the happy ending to this thread since I started it.

As I've already reported here, the truck wouldn't run right after I rebuilt the carb -- it would only start with a blast of carb cleaner and it wouldn't idle; it would only run by revving the throttle. So I was in over my head and threw in the towel.

I took it over to K&H Imports last weekend, and told them "get it running again, make it pass the smog check." And that's exactly what they did -- they replaced the carb and the catalytic converter, and now it runs great and it passed smog. I just got home this afternoon from getting it registered and legal to drive.

So I'm happy to report that there's another Cruiser back on the road! Now that it's running again, it'll be my semi-daily driver (swapping shifts with my Harley) and I'm going to start building it up -- so Spike and the rest of you So-Cal guys, you'll be seeing me around again.

Still running ?

:D

Aaaaaahahahahahaha!!! Too funny; timing is everything. My rig was gathering cobwebs in my driveway for the last six months because I couldn't get it registered because it wouldn't pass smog -- until last week, when I took it back over to K&H. And of course they got it to pass! So I just got it registered and tagged today and it's back home and running great again.

So.... Yes!

Glad it passed and you're back on the road.

I'm in Kalif smog Hell now, too ... I took mine to K&H two years ago, but I'm trying to actually fix the issue now, so I don't have to do the dance every two years. Very frustrating.
