What do you guys know about this? A guy down the street has an '86(I think) mini-truck that says "turbo" EFI on the B pillar. Is this desirable or not?

I ask because my son is almost 16 and needs a small car or truck, and this neighbor almost never uses this truck anymore and could possibly be induced to sell. I do know from talking to him that he has owned it since new.

Thanks.

I have one, they make quite a bit more power than the normal 22RE. These trucks are also equipped with the highly desirable R151F transmission (if a manual) and 23 spline transfer case, as well as the stronger 4 pinion rear diff.

The bad part is that the turbo motor is more complicated and more expensive, the stock turbo has a small exhaust port and small exhaust that creates a lot of backpressure and heat. This causes the exhaust housing to crack, and cracked exhaust manifolds are fairly common as well. Beyond that the normal 22RE timing chain issues are really the only common failure point on the motors.

I had one a few years ago . . . it was a good truck, made way more power than any of the 22re trucks I've had . . . but like has been said, there is more to go wrong. I had major problems with overheating, constantly and to the point that I was giong through headgaskets . . . in the end I lost the turbo.

I would shy away if I were to come across one again, but if modified a little: bigger exhaust, intercooler etc it could likely be an awesome truck. Just make sure the cooling system is in top notch shape for sure!

Just from my experiences . . .

I talked some more to the guy. It is an extra cab. Also in his garage is a mint 1969 GTO!!! The truck is sort of claimed by his son who is living far away. We have been neighbors for 16 years, and I have never seen the son.

I let him know I was interested, so the ball is in his court. Thanks for the info. I would be just as happy with less power and less complexity.

I would sugest not giving your 16 year old son that kind of truck with that kind of power..... I wrecked my first car..... Anyone else wreck their first car? The turbo toys are rare. Get him a carbed auto truck if you can find one. Then you know he's not speeding around being an idiot. (No offence intended) And raise your hand if you want a carbed auto mini?.... what's that, no one? So if he wrecks it no one will be mad.

Harry, sorry man, but in stock CT20 form, its only 15 extra Hp. I'd buy it, but not for my 16 year old. If its a 5 speed, then thats ready for "crawlin" Buy it for yourself.
