So I decided to take a break from rust work today, and took the truck I've been putting together for my sister out for a run. It's an 88 toy, bit of a pile at the moment but it works.
I threw on the tires from the cruiser and grabbed some gear and headed for sooke.
Tugwell is one of my favourite places to go in the summer and I've heard that at least 2 of the ways in I knew about have been dug up. So this trip was to check out a the area.
We went to the start of butler main, I heard there is a new bypass someplace, but the gate was actually open today so we drove right in.
We checked out the bottom of can-opener and walked up it a bit. I have never looked at the whole thing before. most of it doesn't seem too bad, except a few annoyingly place large rocks, and one really nasty part.

Then went to the dugouts where tugwell meets butler. If anyone hasn't been there in the last year they have made this totally impassable.

Large holes where the mounds used to be.

And a new log right at the creek

But it looks like the quad guys have been at it. There's a new trail cut that bypasses all the digouts. It's pretty steep on the entrance and exit but is not too bad for the upper part, just a lot of sticks still. Unfortunately I don't think it's useful, the one entrance is so steep I wouldn't want to try it without being locked or just using a winch. And then you would still have to get up over the rocks which doesn't look fun.

Afterwords we went over to boulder lake, it's not too bad of a trail. Just a lot of rocks. It's a decent lake, although pretty Mucky right at the shore. Couple big boulders right in the middle.

On the way out we got flagged down by a distressed looking guy with road rash on his arms, I guess he came around the corner on his quad a little too fast and lost it. His girlfriend was really hurting, possible broken leg.
His quad was 40 feet down the embankment, wedged in a tree. with the help of 2 other guys that showed up, the quad winch and a tow strap we were able to tow the quad out with the toyota.
Over all it was a pretty interesting trip for being rather spur of the moment.

Nice to see someone's getting out! Looks like you had a good day. Very jealous here. :(

Sounds like those folks on the quad are lucky to have their lives and lucky you came by when you did! Too bad about the girl's leg; hopefully she is ok.

The stuff in that last pic... Has been there for a long time. I've been up and over and back down that section quite a few times if it's where I am thinking of... Where Anderson meets Butler main. The dugouts look new though, like you said there used to be two or three moguls in there that were passable. Good work on helping the quadders out :)

The rocks and the one log are the same, but they added another large log on the other side of the creek, and where there where the old digouts that we would drive over, has been re dug out... A lot deeper too

I was up (the West Coast end) of Anderson the other day for work and saw a black jeep with a girl driver who had nosed in to the gate bypass. It was all dug to hell. I'm guessing the Jeep got scared an broke down because when I returned a tow truck was there and the jeep driver was talking with the tow guy. Dunno.

The bypass appeared impassable.

That's what I had heard too.
I wanna talk to you sometime about the way we took in over muir mountain a few years ago. If that way is still an option.

Cool. The logging appears to be back in more or less full swing again in all those areas so its anyone's guess whats still a viable option. I thing Andrew posted a map with a track log in the members section. Search for "birf breaker" any you should find the thread.
