Where are you guyz getting your steel from?
I got my x member built, now I wanna get the traction bar done as well before the Deer Valley run in 2 weeks!
Im looking for 1 1/4 .250 wall tube, TWO pieces about 3ft 6in in length!
Worst case, I can use Sch 40 pipe, but I dont have a weld in bung with heim for that sizing!
I could get it from Sam at Samco fab, but hes pretty high with his steel prices and Id like to find an alternate source!

BTW!
I took the rig back up in the hills and found a lil boulder garden to play on.
I wanted to see if I was going to get any hop at the rear end, so I pulled my front end on to the top of the boulders, gave her a lil gas...
The rear end started to bounce under torque!'
Without ever having experinced wheel hop before, I was convinced THAT was it!

Here's some pics of my x member installed

Just FYI!

Thanks,

Ketih

Looking good. Can't wait to see it in person.

I had to ask over on reno4x4.com. I was referred to a business over in Sparks, not exactly cheap and the selection wasn't the best. Sorry I can't remember the name. I miss Reno Salvage on 4th. Our choices in Reno suck right now, unless someone else has picked up the slack that I don't know about.

On a Sat. morning, I NEEDED 1/4 in plate to finish the sliders...
I after checking a couple of "hot" spots, I came up empty handed for the pieces.
I was getting desperate...
I swung by the salvage yard on Valley rd and asked if they had scrap I could buy...the lady said that they dont have the liscense to sell scrap...
Jokingly, I said..."Well then, can I HAVE some?"
She looked at me and said..."Hold on".
She got a guy to come around and take me to a scrap pile to pick through.
I thought that was VERY nice of them to do that for me!
I didnt actaully think they would GIVE it to me!

Metal Masters on Deming Way (just off Spice Island's Drive). I just bought a small piece of plate there...the owner is a great guy and will sell any size you need. FYI: They are right next door to the Powder Coat shop...but MM only has a sign on their door and not on the building...

High Desert Steel closed. So other than the big houses that have a minimum 20' stick...I think this is it for small chunks.

If you're order is more than $75 then the guys (can't remember the name but simple to find) over on Coney Island Drive (just west of McCarran and Greg) in the converted houses will sell you whatever you need.

Isn't that A-1 Steel? Used to be Sparks Blacksmith. They have a $75. minimum???????
That must be new, as I have bought over there in the past and there wasn't a minimum. Sometimes people have those signs but don't enforce them.
I buy hardware from McKillicans. They have a $50 minimum sign and I hardly ever purchase that amount.
Also, the scrap yard of Reno Salvalge can be a valuable sorce of some good pieces of metal.
Mike

Oh ya, nice looking x member and sliders. Now get out there and use them.

Thanks for the tips...
What kind of hardware does Mckillicans sell?
I tried Reno Salvage (that yard over by "totally off road"...they will no longer sell to the public, is what the guy told me at the gate!

Yeah...Sparks Blacksmith/A-1...and I think there's another name on the building now. And yes the $75 minimum is new. I went there...talked to the guy and he was FIRM about the $75 minimum. But maybe you're a better salesman the me :).

They're never "finished"...:D

Reno Salvage quit selling steel about two years ago IIRC.

X2 on Metal Masters

Keith, you should have called, I have a 2'X2' piece of 1/4 in my garage.

Plus a bunch of 3/8 in my storage, I found a pile of ~2' sqr pieces laying in the road over buy the gravel pit one day.

DAMN!
Im ALWAYS worried about buggin you and the missus, so I try to keep callin to a minimum, unless its something I REAAAALY need. Id hate to be dubbed as LAZY!:ban:
BTW, since youre offerng...Do you still have those shackle pieces?
Its would save some time if you were willing to part with TWO!

Actually, if you were willing to part with some of those 2x2 pieces, I could actually use some of those as well...TWO to be exact.
It would save me having to cut the bigger pieces of 1/4 plate that I aquired!

Lemme know...

BTW, I need EVERYONE's phone number again after my old cell phone suffered a FATAL drowning in the Truckee River last week!:crybaby::o:lol::lol::lol:

Keith

That's because you scared them....that is really cool of them. By the way some very nice looking welds you got there.

Jack

Thanks Jack!
That's always nice to hear since Im still relatively new to the welding/ fab world!
Just hope it all holds up OK!:D

K

BTW,
I called A1, and they DO enforce the 75 dollar min as they do not like to cut apart their stock for smaller pieces.
They, in fact, referred me to Metal Masters!
Called them and there was no answer...
There is another place that I placed a call to, and they are getting me a price AFTER lunch!

Ill keep you all posted!

Im hoping that at least one of them is reasonable enough...
Ive gotta rear bumper and swing out to do too!;p
Fortunately my rig sits ASS high so when I get the rim, spare and TWO 5 gallon jerry cans of gas it will level out some!

K

Metal Masters had the BEST price, but DID NOT have the suff I needed in stock.
The other place I called (remcor?), had the the tube in stock, but it was WAAAAAAY expensive...like 20 BUCKS A FOOT expensive!:flipoff2:
SOOOO, I called Sam at Samco fab and he hooked me up.
It was a bit more than what I would have paid over at MM, but he's such a cool guy, and I needed it for this weekend! Actually I ended up going with a thinner wall thickness, so I got 4 ft for 25 bucks.
For the future, I will be calling Metal Masters first!
As it turns out, im NOT going to need as much as I thought cuz my ORIGINAL x member design can be re-used to make the lower bar of my traction bar...waste not, want not!
Thanks for the recommendations gents!

Just thought you all would like to know!
