Jim C told me about the two sledge hammer trick. The principle sounds easy enough. You want to heat it just a little and the trick is to hit the housing on both sides at exactly the same time. This will cause the hole to flex and distort allowing the thing to drop right out. I am not, nor have I ever been that corrdinated enough to do something like that:)

On a pitman arm that you don't plan on using again (such as the one on the minitruck box) - the easiest way is to put the puller on it...tighten it up, and then if if won't come off - fire up the mig welder and run a few beads around it. The instant heat usually breaks it right off.

Now that I can do with my stick welder since I only have a little propane torch. Good idea. I thought about it but didn't even really consider it.

Just to make sure before I destroy the arm, the mini and the FJ40 arms have the same teeth count and are interchangeable?

Yes, they are. Also remember to align the little >< marks on the shaft and pitman arm. But you knew that.

Well after cuting a little chunk out and welding to it for heat, it came off after much negotiation. Steering is much better and crisper now. Thanks for all the help.

ALL READY FOR S-n-T :D

Got the locker, got the power steering, but no surf-n-turf. My pool filter imploded. Play money just got reasigned to that. Figures. I have some gears to drop off to you.

when removing the 32" nut on the pitman arm do I need to remove the upper drag link? When I try to turn the big nut, the whole steering is moving. I got the snap on tool to remove the pitman arm, But cant get the damm nut off? can I heat it?

No, you don't need to remove the drag link. What do you mean by "the whole steering is moving?" Are you using a breaker bar on the nut? Turn your steering wheel to full lock, then the nut won't turn anymore. Spray some PB Blaster on it and let it soak in. Hit the pitman arm with a hammer a few times (or a bunch of times)....might break the nut free. See my thread from my PS install for what I did: https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-seri...d-power-steering-oem-pump-mini-truck-box.html. Hope it helps.....

You need an impact wrench.

I got my 60 pitman arm off with a 3 arm gear puller.. First soaked in CRC, setup the gear puller, maximum torque on the screw applied by a 20mm open end wrench, couple of good smacks on the puller screw end with a BFH and off it popped.. I left the nut on the sector shaft to keep it all together when it let go..

Snap On CJ119B

Everything else is a waste of time and money.

i tried a few different pullers, got the loaner set from advance, tried all of those, beat on it with a hammer, nada. Put this puller on there and it came right off, no drama. Slid right off, no loud noises or anything. I found the Snap On CJ119B on ebay, won it for $56. Now Im just trying to figure out how to get that old seal out of there!

Use sheet metal screw to get the seal out. Just screw it into the old seal and grab it with vice grips then yank.

2x on the two hammer method. Add Kroil first, then the quality puller, then the two hammers. Pitman arm doesn't stand a chance.

Ok I was doing the mini truck PS swap and came to the moment where I had to remove the damn arm. At first I tried the pb blaster trick for a couple days and tried a cheap HF pitman arm puller. Well the puller slipped off one end and was bent up. I next tried two butane torches on my manual box which melted the seal but still no worky. What I found that did the trick was pretty simple. I bought another HF puller and snugged it down a little with my air ratchet. Then I laid it on the floor and put my foot on the arm. I gave it a few short whacks with a hammer and it came off. I had both removed in less than 5 minutes. No violent recoil either.
