Hi all,

I am considering a troop carrier or an LV as a daily driver and would like to hear some opinions from those of you with experience in either of these rigs. Any thoughts - positive or negative - are appreciated.

The motivation to sell my current '06 station wagon and move to a troopy or LV stems from it's lack of utility, ridiculously poor mileage, fear of it getting scratched and dented, and my apparent lead foot which seems to get heavier in fast cars. The fun factor for the family could be great in a big LC and it would be used primarily for commuting to work (16 miles round trip) and around town trips. I have owned several 40's over the years and am familiar with the idiosyncrasies related to US 2F models.

I am somewhat familiar with LV's and the unobtanium nature of parts. I have lusted after this truck since I was a kid going camping in one with friends. I think that this would only be a reasonable option if I was able to find one in great shape and did not require much work to drive every day. Not sure how likely finding one like this would be.

The troop carrier is attractive as parts are for the most part readily available and solid trucks seem to be more available these days. I've wanted a diesel for some time and the good mileage that goes along with it. I have driven RHD before in AUS but never in the states. I would ideally like to tow my 40 with it but doubt the 2H could handle it. Maybe with a turbo? Importing one from AUS is an attractive option but comes with risks. Some US troop carriers that I have seen for sale seem to hover around $20K which seem steep. Thoughts on reasonable prices?

I have been searching the boards, but would like to hear any updated thoughts you all might have relating to owning one of these fine rigs.

If you know of any nice troop carriers or LV's for sale that need little or no work, please let me know.

TIA,
Randy

If you are serious I can help you get one but it will be a RHD one. In any case let me know, and you can get one for less then 10,000 thats to your door . Dont get ripped off buying one on ebay or such places most of those guys have to make a living selling cruisers so the prices will reflect that. I guess i could see paying in the teens for a nice LHD one but they are hard to find. If I can help let me know

randy,
i sold my troopy and went for the wagon mainly because of the four doors. Mine is mainly going to be used for sunday afternoons, but will handle my daily work commute of about 1.5 miles round trip. the troopy is definitely cool, but it seemed to me i would be able to get more use out of the wagon because of the backseat.

burbankianfj45wagon - thanks for the details. Your LV is a thing of beauty...nice job on the build.

missipboy - I agree that an LV would be better for family hauling due to the rear doors and rear bench. Finding one that is DD ready - and affordable will be tough.

Thanks for everyone's comments and assistance in the search. A true cruiser adventure and I wonder where it will lead. :)
