Hi, over the last few months I've been infatuated with 75 series troopy, was pretty set at getting one and did a lot of research reading forums with tremendous amount of info available here and other places. But I have a change of heart and looking towards 45/47 Troopy. Can someone please point me to any good starter threads? I want to start with basic stuff like years in which they were offered, various models (BJ45? HJ45? HJ47?), what were the configurations and options from factory, and most importantly the engine configurations offered through the years they were manufactured.

I am just looking for good primer info/threads/sites and will go from there. Many thanks in advance and looking forward.

So if there's a 1979 troopy diesel what would it be? BJ45, HJ45 or HJ47?

I don't know whether in 1979 Toyota produced the troopy with B or H and in either case what specifically was the engine type e.g. 2B? 3B? 1H?

79 can be hj45 and hj47 change over years 45 has h engine 47 has 2 h engine and disc brake front end.you can get power steering and air con in hj47 also has tacho in it

Bj 45 has b engine just depends on what part of the world your from if your country got these

Thanks!

So 79s never had a BJ, just the HJ?

Do all BJ45 have "B" engine? Not 2B or 3B?

In 79 you could get a BJ45, FJ45, or Hj45... The HJ47 came about in late 1980. My old HJ47's VIN ended in 00026.
BJ had the four cylinder diesel.... Europe/Central America/Japan
HJ had the six cylinder diesel..... Australia
FJ had the six cylinder petrol..... Europe/ Middle East

Might be missing some facts on the above: the BLUF is that all offered the troop carrier variant that you're after. Check out my album on mud. I've owned two in the past. Both hJ47s with the 2H diesel.

Thanks! So it looks like:

HJ47:
All HJ47 came with "2H" diesel 6 cylinder with 4 speed gearbox. No further question on that.
Next question is: in which years exactly was HJ47 produced?

HJ45:
All HJ45 came with "H" diesel engine, which is also 6 cylinder with 4 speed gear box. No further question on that.
Next question is: in which years exactly was HJ45 produced?

FJ45:
All FJ45 came with "2F" petrol engines. None came with any other petrol variant? Is this correct? can someone confirm?

BJ45:
It looks like all BJ45 had the "B" engine. None came with "2B" or "3B"? Can someone please confirm? All BJ45 came with 3B engine. Confirmed in replies below.
Next question is: in which years exactly was BJ45 produced?

I guess what I am looking to do is construct a following table with Y/N in each cell. Greatly appreciate the inputs.

Google could give you what you need...
Just a swag from me is: (just troopy as the pickup versions were made even earlier)
Hj47s from 8/80-84
Hj45s ??-7/80
Bj45s ??-84
Fj45s ??-84

I think that some 83/84 BJ45s came with the much desired H55 5 speed trans... I know for a fact that the shorter BJ42s did for those last two years.

Further, I would bet that all BJ45s came with only 3b's (troopy).

Bj42 lx had 5speed I don't thick troopys did

Thanks. Here's what I have, as far as which models were produced in which year, based on above comments:

Please keep the comments coming as far as the options available such as 4sp vs. 5sp., engines, etc.

- According to Wikipedia, "1980 – The H diesel engine (HJ45) was replaced by the 4.0 L 2H engine (now with chassis code HJ47)."
This means that HJ47 started in 1980. This is in line with daniel.watters comment above.

- According to Wikipedia, "1973 – The 300,000th Land Cruiser was sold worldwide. The first diesel Land Cruiser was introduced for export on long wheelbase models with a six-cylinder H engine.". Since "H" engine was only available on HJ45, this means that HJ45 started in 1974 all the way through 1980. Why until 1979? Because per above statement the H was replaced by 2H on HJ47 chassis. Since I don't know the exact cut off date for the "H" engine HJ45 in 1980, it might be that in 1980 there was both HJ45 and HJ47 available. Updating table below accordingly.

- According to Wikipedia, "1981 – the Diesel version received front disc brakes and the more powerful 3.4 L 3B engine, and added LWB BJ45 with 3B". This means BJ45 started in 1981. Updating the able accordingly below for BJ45.

- Looking at FJ45 registry thread on this forum it looks like the FJ45 started as far back as 1963 approx. Updating table accordingly.

daniel.watters,

According to statement from wiki for 1981, "the Diesel version received front disk brakes and more powerful 3.4 L 3B engine, and added LWB BJ45 with 3B" .....

Looks like you're right, all all BJ45s came with 3B engines only.

PLUS, all BJ45's had front disk brakes.

My 82 bj45 has drum brakes, and the aussie market got disc brakes only in certain regions. Not sure why? But I have seen a handful of hj47's with front drum brakes. I believe by 83, most hj47's were disk.

I'm certain it was a regional thing... My 1980 HJ47 had drums (panama). My 1981 Hj47 had drums (Aussie).

Some hj47s have disc some drums some power steering some don't some air con some don't some fairy overdrive a some don't
