well the following thread is about my summer trip to the northern areas of Pakistan(Deosai). its was a family trip and we travelled by 3 toyota variants LJ78,BJ60,2nd Gen surf. i would like to share some of the information regarding Deosai.

The Deosai Plains are 32 km south of Skardu. This plateau is the habitat of the greatly threatened Himalayan Brown Bear and many other wild animals. At an average elevation of 4114 metres, Deosai is now a National Park and protected area for wildlife.

The rolling grassland here supports no trees or shrubs and the area is snow covered for seven months of the year. Spring comes to Deosai in August when millions of wild flowers begin to bloom all over the lush green grassland. This is a time when Deosai looks like a paradise with a landscape full of wild flowers on green rolling hills and crystal clear water streams with snow covered peaks in the background.

Deosai - Sheosar Lake
Deosai Lake, or Sheosar Lake from the Shina language meaning "Blind lake" (Sheo - Blind, Sar - lake) is in the park. The lake, at an elevation of 4,142 metres (13,589 ft), is one of the highest lakes in the world. Its length is 2.3 kilometres (7,500 ft), width 1.8 kilometres (5,900 ft) and average depth 40 metres (130 ft). It is located near the Chilim Valley on the Deosai Plains.

Astore is connected to Gilgit which is well connected by air with Islamabad(weather dependent) and by road with Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Skardu and Chitral. You can take a flight to Gilgit from the capital of the country and drive to Astore from Gilgit on metalled road.

You may not realize but your posts and pics literally change the way many many people in the USA view Pakistan . In a geographical and environmental sense.
Beautiful.

Agree 100% I was one of those, who thought Pakistan was all desert with very little vegetation. Thanks much for posting this. It looks a lot like some areas of Colorado, you even an animal that looks like our Marmot. Our high elevation areas average 2000-3000 meters which is several thousand meters lower than that park explaining the more sparse vegetation.
