Well it was time to spruce up the last tremclad paintjob (Rattle Can) as it was showing it's age chip, scratches etc. I was going to go rattlecan again but did the math and determined the tremclad paint cans were cheaper at $13 a quart. I used 2 & 1/2 quarts in total. I mixed in some reducer and thinned down the paint sprayed it on with a HVLP grafity feed gun. Overall I quite pleased with the result given the effort/costs. Sure looks good with the Old Man Emu suspension and fender flares I scavenged from the parts cruiser. DSC02274.webp

That's beautiful! :beer::beer::beer:

I know nothing about painting, but did you put any hardener in the paint as well when you thinned it?

(OK, I have to ask, what's with the black bezel? ;) )

Looks better now you got it pin-striped:D

No hardner - I'm only expecting it to last a wheelin season or two. I chose tremclad for its rust inhibitor qualities and low price;).

Not a harty paint by any means - but easy to touch up!!

Hey I was over today to pick up some parts and got to see your rig. It looks really good!

I really liked your heater in the center console

Thanks...

The Best part is the cushy elbow rest on top. :grinpimp: I can shoot a few more pics and post up if you like. I spent a bit of time designing/building the console and am quite happy how it turned out.

Hopefully the parts work out for you. Do you have a build thread going?:wrench::wrench:

Well I said to heck with it, I like that blue and white combo... so I've begun painting. Now, I know it's not a Toyota but I thought I'd share my progress on here because Cruz's FJ was my inspiration. Perhaps if I add my experience someone else might get the courage to paint their truck with Tremclad/Rustoleum!

So the details are (thus far), I'm using the same tremclad dark blue and white for the roof. I'm using a 60 gal compressor, a no-name HVLP gun, and in-line water separator. I've made sure to keep the garage well ventilated by having all doors and windows open and added extra insurance by breathing through a cheap cartridge style paint respirator. The gun was set at 37psi. I've never painted anything before. So far I've started with the interior sheet metal and here is what I've done:
- sand factory paint by hand with 120 grit using those foam sponge sand paper doo-dads.
- tape what I don't want to paint. I used some kinda thin vapour barrier plastic that you buy by the roll at home-depot.
- then using the hvlp, I shot un-thinned tremclad oil-based grey primer
- the next day I shot the blue through the hvlp. I thinned it 30% with mineral spirits.

The goal was to get the paint onto the interior sheet metal with as least amount of work as I could. For the exterior I will do more/lighter coats and wet sand between (4 coats?), not sure yet. So far I'm very pleased with the way things are going. I was scared before starting this because I'd never painted anything before. Now, I'm starting to think "hey this is kinda fun"!

I'll post a follow up once I'm done. Thanks to We-Cruz for posting up and inspiring me to do this!

Nice work.

Are you going with the FJ40 white roof too?

You'll love how the white roof keeps your truck cooler in the summer heat too
