Hi. I have a 1994 HDJ 80, with 1HD-T engine and A442F automatic gearbox.

A few months ago, the engine-gearbox set started trembling wildly at idle. It does so when the engine is at work temperature but relatively hot, for example after a motorway cruise or a demanding 4x4 session (e.g. a sandy stretch). In these conditions, the problem seems aggravated by additional small demands, for example maneuvering to park. High summer temperatures make everything worse, which suggests that the issue is linked to engine temperature.

That said, the engine does not overheat at all. Idle is regulated at 650 rpm, and the trembling is relieved by pressing the throttle, say, to 1000 rpm. The engine is quiet as a pool table right after starting from cold or while little is requested from it (e.g. errands on the street).

There are no problems of performance associated with this issue. The engine sounds well otherwise, which leads me to discard injection problems. An inspection of engine mounts (which were replaced shortly before this started) or silentblocks did not reveal any significant crack. A friend has suggested possible problems with the torque converter, but diassembling and inspecting it is a tall order unless more specific information is available.

I would really appreciate any insight on what might be the cause behind this trembling.

Have you checked the transmission and engine mounts?

Might get more responses from the Diesel forum.

Get a bit of clear hose, should be 12mm, and install from fuel filter to fuel pump
Would say she's sucking air somewhere and the fuel filter head is a very likely candidate.

Also, now long since the fuel filter was replaced and what brand?

Thanks to both. She underwent a comprehensive service including transmission, filters and more, two months ago in preparation for a journey to Mauritania, which we did. By the way, the fuel filter is OEM and was replaced 10000 km and two months ago. She performed very well in the sand dunes, with the exception of the described trembling issue.

The suspect on the filter head is very sensible. One year ago, she started de-priming the fuel circuit after several hours stopped. I had to prime by pumping the secondary OEM filter head to be able to start the engine. A mechanic installed a non-return valve in the input port of the primary filter, and that solved the symptoms. Then my atention was drawn by other urgencies. But of course, the actual problem of air being sucked somewhere remained unsolved.

I am going to test the filter head. Thanks a lot for the suggestion.
