How important is it to have the cone washer TRD/Mc lug nuts? I just found out the "tundra" lug nuts that I bought when I got the wheels are tacoma lugs. DT wanted to sell me some w/o the cone washer, I decided to hold off and see if its a important.

I think the washer is important to protect the mating surface on the forged aluminum wheels and prevent galling:

Personally I’d say *vital*

There is a significant difference in the feel of torquing up a mcgard lug with the free spinning cone washer vs the locking lugs that come in the kit that have the built-in taper and no spinning cone.

As @gaijin says this can lead to galling. And beyond damage to the wheel, that can lead to improper clamping loads for a given lug torque.

Now if we were talking a steel wheel with tapered seats or aluminum with tapered steel inserts like the early 80 wheels.. no cone washer needed. The steel against steel is better at avoiding damage. But on our aluminum seating surface the only way to avoid damage in the long term is with the correct lug nuts.

I think those are the long format version which will be flush with the hub face. there is another that is shorter, looks a little dished, and IMO looks better.

I bought mcgard 65515BK which is a full set including locks and socket, and 65315BK to have enough regular lugs to replace the locks.

Note that these are the black chrome version. Look better, but they do seem to be corroding lightly at the edges of the splines.. regular chrome might not do that.

I also got a 65302 spare spline drive socket.

Extremely important.
Lugnut metal is MUCH harder than the aluminum wheel material.
Without that washer, damage is going to happen and torque values will be off.
