From Wikipedia: Driving through Cherokee Park, a 2.4 mile Scenic Loop. One of the original parks designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, the park provides a pastoral setting amid rolling hills, open meadows and woodlands of the Beargrass Creek valley. The secret to navigating the park is to keep turning left to stay in the park or keep turning right to leave the park.

Steve and Betsy (@Speeter),

Thanks for making the trip to Louisville and enjoying a morning of conversation and coffee. It was truly a pleasure to get to know you all a bit. I look forward to crossing trails again.

Cheers to @hecrod for inspiring this trek across the US which is bringing people together with a common passion for an iconic vehicle!

Here are some pics of the handoff.

Louisville to Mammoth Cave National Park: November 19th.

I wanted to start by saying that this expedition has been great for me. It has been a huge motivator to get my '78 40 into better running order. Here is a list of the projects that I tackled to get her ready:
- 'New' brake master and booster from an 80
- Rear disc conversion
- Rebuilt the rear axle (bearings, seals, Spartan locker)
- Installed weather stripping on the front doors
- New gear reduction starter
- New alternator belt (after mine shredded the day before the trip)

Here is a shot of my son Will helping to get the truck ready for the trip by handing me tools from the top side when I was replacing the starter!

When I got our 40 several years ago, it was not running and needed lots of work. Until this trip, I had never driven it more than 20 miles from home, so the idea of hitting the road with the 40 was not the most comfortable thought. Over the last several weeks, I tried to drive the 40 as much as I could to shake out any more bugs that were hiding. The kids loved it and wanted me to take them to school in the 40 every day. How do you say no to that!

The plan was to drive from louisville to Mammoth Cave National Park to meet @Tennessee80. We planned on camping there and making a side trip to Glasgow Ky to meet up with @wileycoyote for a few beers while we checked out his shop.

Here is a shot of my route.

IMG_0960.webp

The 40 was packed with cold weather camping gear (expecting temps in the 20's that night and 18mph winds), the toolbox and a selection of bourbon and beer. We were ready to roll.

I started off by hitting a few local sights that fit my route and schedule.

The Bell of Louisville was the first stop. She is a working steam powered paddle boat tat was built in 1914.

IMG_0736.webp

.... to be continued.

Next stop was the Louisville Slugger bat factory and museum. It's located right on Main Street and there is a great tour which ends in the factory where you get to see them manufacturing custom bats for the pros. The front of the building has the worlds largest bat on display which is inspired by a bat used by Babe Ruth in the 1920's. It stands 120ft tall.
IMG_0749.webp

Next stop was also the worlds largest bat. Just a different kind. It hangs upside down at a costume shop just a few blocks down main street from th slugger factory... (hard to pass up the shot:) )
IMG_0755.webp

Then I rolled down to Churchill Downs. If you have not been to a race at the downs, you are missing out. It's a beautiful place and being up close to the rail when the thoroughbreds thunder by is and experience that cannot be adequately explained but must be taken in inperson to fully understand.

IMG_0757.webp

The last stop in Louisville was at Sunergos where I picked up an Americano for the drive and some fresh beans to share with @Tennessee80 and @wileycoyote. If you are ever in the area, this is a must! Best coffee in the region (IMO).

Next stop... Fort Knox and the Patton Museum.

Alright. Time for the next installment.

I traveled on from Louisville to Fort Knox. I planned on visiting the Patton Museum and then stopping off at the Bullion Depository to pick up a few bars of gold to drop into the toolbox.

Here is a shot of the depository from the road.

IMG_0851.webp

No one answered the doorbell at the depository so I moved on.

The museum is located on base so in order to gain access you. Have to check in, go through a background check and get a pass to enter. They did have a display of 'gold' bars in the security checkpoint which served as a good reminder of where I was...

IMG_0789.webp

Once on base I headed straight to the Patton Museum.

IMG_0839.webp

The museum was fantastic. I really enjoyed taking my time wondering through the exhibits and looking at all of the vehicles and weapons that they had on display. I wish I would have had more time to spend there.

Here are some pics from the museum.
