Transmission window

Strange question, but what is the “window” and the sliding closet for on the transmission bell housing right above the starter hole? And should it be open or shut? I haven’t seen this before.

No problem. That little pointer behind the "door" points to the timing marks on the flywheel.
While it's this far taken apart color in the timing marks on the flywheel with white paint to be able to see them easier
