Transmission window

Strange question, but what is the “window” and the sliding closet for on the transmission bell housing right above the starter hole? And should it be open or shut? I haven’t seen this before.

No problem. That little pointer behind the "door" points to the timing marks on the flywheel.
While it's this far taken apart color in the timing marks on the flywheel with white paint to be able to see them easier

@FJtimr Here's what I did with my timing "flapper door" when I put my transmission back in. Also painted the bell housing silver, offers lots of contrast and makes things easier to see down in the nether reaches. That timing door is comically difficult to see when all reassembled.

Does yours still have the rubber gasket behind it? Had no clue it had a gasket until I pulled the entire transmission, what was left was crispy baked plastic.
