Hey. I am trying to help my buddy get his tcase shifter working.

he bought a used trans/tcase. we belive it is a G52. the trasfer case is a forward shift design. it was bought with out the 4wd shifter.
it does not go into 4Low.

with out the shifter installed it easily can be shifted into 4L. but with the shifer installed it only goes into 2 and 4High. and grinds into neutral, but wont fully engauge.

so with the shift forks in 4Low where they belong, the cover botled on and the shift lever out, the driver side fork that shifts 4Low is waaay far back.

its like the shifter isnt long enuff. and the fork seems like it is too far back.

now we tried different desings blocks, and different design shifters.
some shifters are symetrical on the end, and some have a knotch cut out. neither of these worked and all are the same length.
i even took the shifter out of my truck that i knopw has the G52 in it. no worky.

its almost like the block needs to have a off center hole for the shifter.
i have never seen an off center hole block. have you?

and it appears that it is possible to drive the roll pins out of the fork shaft and remove the square deals that the shifter contacts and moves.

so the PO may have removed and installed them with new ones.

so the questions are,
is there a off center hole block?
is there a shifter that is longer?
and how can i identify the series number of the tcase?

This is a forward shift:

Is this what you are talking about?

If so, the shift rails both need to be forward and the holes need to line up to make a square, then it is in 4H, remember everything is oposite from the way the shifter moves. the shifter goes right and up to go to 4 low, so that means the left shift rail goes down when going into 4L..... Sounds odd though.....

Yeah, thats what I'm talking about, Jerod. I didnt relize these transmissions and tranfercases were metallic gray. Since all the ones i have ever seen were brown  ;)

I understand the way the shifter rails have to line up, and all. Its just mind boggling how far back the left rail is when its in 4Low. cause I can put the shifer in the slot on the left fork, and then the bolt holes on the plate are about 3/8" behind the holes of the trans.

I have never had a problem with this. Its like the shifter needs to be longer.

Well it is a j patern.... 4L is farther forward than 2H.... Maybe it's an older forward shift version or something? I know that 84 will swap into 86..... But now I have a top shift and am not planning on going back!!!! :D
