Is there anyone out there using Marks gears in there transfer case, if so, are they worth while? I'm looking to rebuild mine with lower gears (maybe 3.05). I can only find this one company that has them for an 85 BJ70, are there others? Does anyone import Marks into Canada, or US? Any info would would be greatly appreciated. Doug

I have the 2.8 Marks set and the crawl is great. I must say, gear whine at speed especially 4th gear is 20% over a factory set. I have 5,000 miles on the gears and the noise cut down by 1/2 (very noisy for first 1,500 miles). Greg Bowie and a few others can chime in.

If you want a quiet set of better than stock BJ70 gears by the 2.27 factory FJ60 gear set.

If you can live with some noise (with windows down etc) then use the marks.
---I don't think I would do them knowing what I know now.

I have the 1:08/3:05 in both the BJ60 and BJ74. The BJ60 has the older style, while the BJ74 has the newer. As rick_d says, gear whine is noticable. If I was to roadtrip in my BJ60 I would need earplugs to stay sane. In the BJ74 it is not as bad. If this is the newer cut, or better insualtion, or a bit of both I am not sure. I guess the SSR's cover some of the whine too.

The 3:05 reaquire some clearancing of the t-case to make room.

rick-d, is this the case with the 2.8's too?

The increase in gearing is great!

the case need much less modifications for the 2.8 set, about 20 minutes of fine work to make the fit.

One cause of noise is gear lash, I can notice throttle load-idle-coast load (ie with fuel, neutral point, w/o fuel coasting) in 4th can get tiresome. I believe the Toyota gears have a much tighter tolerance and do not have the whine.

I too have the late set that uses a Marks idler shaft and tapered bearings for the idler gearset, and both the hi and low gears ride on roller bearings ala FJ62 sets (no bushings)

I have the 2.82 / .92 in my BJ70 and with 35's and 4.56 diffs, the speedo is perfect. The crawl ratio is only decent (by rock crawling standards) at 58:1. If I were to do it over, I'd have bucked up the extra $$ and gone with a Marlin Toybox instead. That way you get a much better crawl ratio and no gear whine....did I mention they are pretty noisey? Not as bad as the 3.05 though....I've driven a few rigs with 3.05 and it's more noticable than the 2.82
