what is the easiest way to tell what type of tranny is in my 89' 4runner 4cyl 5 speed?

an 86' pick up 4cy 5 speed tranny will fit, right? as long as the t-case shifter is in the right spot?

are there only two variations? will both work?

help?

As far as I've understood it is after 1983 The only real differences are whether the trans. came from behind a carbed/efi truck, and if the vehicle had ADD or not (1990 or later and not all trucks had it). You will want to make sure that you get a trans that is top shift if yours it, or vice versa.

so wait a second...

i don't see anything that says i can't use a tranny that has the t-case shifter right on the transmission housing in place of a tranny that didn't have it. i just will stick to using the t-case's original shifter that is sticking out of the top of it already, and ignore the spot on the transmission for the shifter forks of the other type of t-case...is that right? i don't know what i'm talking aboot...

thanks!

this is a G54. this uses a forward shift transfer case.

this is a W56A. this uses a top shift transfer case.

look at the VIN plaque. on the drivers door jam. it is white, and square. has black lettering.
Look for the trans code. you probaly have a W56. check out that link i gave you and look at every single year range of transmissions. get familiar with the codes. use this knowledge to find the code printed on the VIN plaque.

W56 series use both top and forward shifting setups.

if you install a top shift in place of where you had a forward shift you may have to cut the floor and get new boots.

swapping handles will do you no good.

all 4cyl transmissions will bolt up to all 4 cylinder engines. 20R,22R,22RE.

some are longer, some are shorter. just cause the trans bolts to the engine does not mean it will bolt to the cross member.

the gear driven cases with 7 bolts are shorter in length than the chain driven cases with 5 bolts.

for example, a L43 trans out of a 1981 truck wont bolt up to the crossmember installed in a 86 truck.

the V6 transmissions are R series. with the V6 housing on there it wont bolt up to a 4cyl. You must use a 4cyl turbo bellhousing on the R series trans to make it bolt up.

having ADD does not mean it wont bolt into a truck that didnt have it.

when you start swapping in late trans to early truck, you run into drive shaft pattern differences.

but in the OP's case, an 86 to a 89 wont have this problem.

My L52 is slowly giving up the ghost and I am having a hard time finding a replacement for the L52. All of the other trannies require drive shaft changes. So, if I have to change my driveshaft lengh I might as well make it count. I want to bolt an r151 up behind my 1983 22r motor. Is there a big problem with this? I know I will have to get an adapter for my t-case but besides this does it bolt up to the 22r?

I am not worried about crossmember differences as I will take care of that problem. I am more worried about it bolting up.

Sorry for the hi-jack and thanks again...

gotch ya

sorry, i phrased that question very poorly...i guess i should have just asked if my t-case with the shifter on the transfer case will bolt to a transmission that has the t-case shifter on the transmission's case. i straightened it out already though...thanks for all the info....and someone help lowtideride cause i've got no idea....

thanks again...

it took me along time tow type all that stuff out. please do me the favor of reading it twice. Sometimes when I read a post, I dont completely understand the question, and have to read it again. maybe if you did that, you would know the answer.

Along the lines of the use of the turbo bell housing, you could just use the whole set up out of a turbo truck. That trans is a R151F

The answer to that is maybe. you will have to side by side compare them. some will interchange while others will not. R series will not fit to a W series. I dont recall the status of the G to W

A long time huh? Sorry I missed the line if it bothered you that much you could have simply just not posted back up.

Dont insult me. I am doing you a favor. I type all this stuff out that I know from experience, which in some cases takes years to become a pro at. I do it cause I care. I just sometimes feel like the information is sent out to space without anyone taking the time to absorb it, or learn from it.
We all have one thing in common (well probably more) and that is we drive the best trucks ever made, so lets please get along. :D

I din't insult you, I missed something and in my book you came off as kind of rude. I just said if it was that much of pain don't respond back. I have been around this forum for a long time and try my best to help people out, and being rude if someone missed something never figured into it. I run a cruiser forum here in Florida and organize events I know that it takes a lot of effort to get information out there.
