I just picked up a 36' lowboy gooseneck. I'm replacing the rotted wood deck with a steel, at least on the front of the trailer where the camper will be mounted. Maybe later I can do the whole thing.

What thickness should the decking be? Can I put the steel deck on the crossmembers and leave the deck recessed a couple inches, or should I weld in channel of beams crossways to the current ones and raise the deck? Or does it matter????

Thanks,
Mike

a pic to help explain....

Cross braces front to back with steel deck on top to help stiffen the frame and leave the deck flush with the top of the channel or decking on top of the supports that are there and have it recessed into the frame 1.5"

Need some input here.
gn deck frame small.webp

What about just using the metal decking they put on like a snowmobile trailer. It is like planks but steel with rolled over edges.

I believe expanded steel is stronger than solid sheet steel on a per pound basis so you could use thinner material without losing strength.

Cross braces would also help.

BTW nice trailer, wanna haul my FJ40 from Reno to Moab next year?:grinpimp:

hey mike,

DavidDIY,
Thats not a mobil home frame,, its a flatbed trailer, for moving large equipment/vehicles etc. They come with decking usually made of wood, pressure treated or exotic woods like south american oak(its whats on out flatbed at work). Keep an eye on this thread and as it unfolds it should be clearer..
