It looks like someone made kind of a mess of things with at least 2 generations of wiring. There isn't enough detail to tell if the wires from the converter are spliced into the 7-pin wires or if something was added/deleted/left in place. I think I can see some 10-gauge wires that carried brake controller power at some point in the past. If the converter still works, I think you've got everything you need to run lights and brake controller power. It's just a matter of getting things spliced, connected and loomed neatly.
My 4-pin flat connector coming from the converter plugs into the back side of the 7-pin connector harness. If I need to tow a trailer with a 4-pin, I just have an adapter that plugs into the 7-pin socket and then converts from 7-pin round to 4-pin flat. I never have to disconnect the 4-pin flat coming from the converter from the the back of the 7-pin.
All 7 wires from the 7-pin come out of the back of the connector box (bottom left of this photo). Then the 4 wires for the lights come off the end of the short pigtail and go to a 4-pin flat connector. That is where the 4-pin flat connector coming from my converter plugs in. That's the connection you see at the center of the photo.
In the upper photo, there are two wires in the grey sheath. Those are the 12V power and Brake Control wires. The white wire going off to the left is the ground wire coming from the trailer. I found a bolt that goes to the frame, removed the dirt and paint from the surface the washer mates to so there was good conductivity and then bolted it down with a little dielectric grease to keep water and dirt out of the mating surface of the ring terminal. Hopefully that keeps a good ground. If that fails in the future, I will probably just run another wire from there up to the battery to ensure a good ground.
I'm thinking it might be nice to strip the old controller and 7pin, get some fresh ones that I know to be unmolested and then go in and clean everything up.
That was the route I took with my converter. I stripped old loom and butt connectors off my existing 7-pin connector and was able to clean it up and reuse it.
Ali, I went with the Hopkins and ordered it but the only place that sells them online has them on back order. Need to have this and the brake controller in for Ouray!
