My trail truck (avatar) has a 22r in it and I am considering doing either a propane conversion or a VW diesel swap(1.6-1.9 TD). acme adapters makes an adapter plate to bolt the VW deisels up to a 22r/22re transmission. the cost isnt too bad ($300)
gas mileage with the VW diesel can be as good as 40 mpg with stock tires.
the 1.6 starts lifeout with 65 hp and 98ftlbs of torque the 1.9 75hp and 114 ft lbs of torque (these are stock #s and have aALOT of room to tweak and seeing 120 hp and 200 ft lbs out of the 1.6 is not hard to acheive (with reliable results and good mileage)
A good friend of mine swapped the 1.6L into his suzuki sidekick and he seemed happy with it (at the time, he never mentions it anymore). He hasn't driven the thing for the past 2 years either....
On a side note, I had a VW Rabbit w/ that same engine in it a couple years ago. Was told it was a HG (oil in the coolant), tried fixing it, had the head decked etc. Turns out the block was cracked. Apparently this is a pretty normal condition with these things.
This is a really good forum if you have any specific VW diesel questions:
