Toyota trucks with alternative (NON OEM) engine swap thread

I am putting together a thread on engine swaps for the Toyota trucks and 4runners for peoples research and comparisons of pros and cons of each swap.
I am looking for the costs incurred, fabricated parts, available parts, who makes conversion kits and adapters.

For those who have already swapped, how do you like it ? what would you do again? different? long term review? ease of sawp? pointer?

Please post up links to builds that have been done to Toyota trucks and 4runners (Diesels, gassers, propane)

Please keep chat to a minumum, I dont care why you dont like a certain engine and I dont want to hear why someones elses engine was a bad choice.

PLEASE make all posts legible.

A Toyota (Lexus) V8 1UZFE into a Diesel (4runner) surf (bad engine.....) most of us would kill for a diesel and here is a guy who opts for a faster Surf.

Please dont post up links to advance adapters to suggest a swap... if you have no affiliation with a swap dont just suggest one because you did a search on the web.

my plans concerning swaps include doing a lexus V8 into my 92 4runner, I was considering the 3.4 upgrade and decided against it simply because I can buy a lexus V8 for the same price and this conversion is relativly simple- other than some fabbed up engine mounts and wiring this is alot easir than one would think utilizing many off the shelf toyota parts to make it work.

My trail truck (avatar) has a 22r in it and I am considering doing either a propane conversion or a VW diesel swap(1.6-1.9 TD). acme adapters makes an adapter plate to bolt the VW deisels up to a 22r/22re transmission. the cost isnt too bad ($300)

gas mileage with the VW diesel can be as good as 40 mpg with stock tires.
the 1.6 starts lifeout with 65 hp and 98ftlbs of torque the 1.9 75hp and 114 ft lbs of torque (these are stock #s and have aALOT of room to tweak and seeing 120 hp and 200 ft lbs out of the 1.6 is not hard to acheive (with reliable results and good mileage)

You know some thing...................I could kiss you right now!

I was on ebay a week ago looking at these engines and thought this would be a great swap for my RET (A.T only) 4r thanks for mentioning the above :D

Biiig wet one!!!!!!!!!!!

P.s. trying to keep the chating to a minimum!

Dude you can chat all you want..... KEEP THE KISSING TO A MINUMUM!!!

the only drawback to the diesel in the place of a 22r is the fact in stock form (1.6 diesel) is lower HP than the truck is already, requiring a few mods to get the desired effect but still maintain the great mileage.

With the advent of dual cases and lower gear for the Tcase the choice of engines becomes a little broader than before, even the larger Rotary engines (mazda) look like a good option (how about a built rotary in a 2wd light weight prerunner type?) these can acheive great HP #s and have been made by mazda since 1967. I have read articles on these being built to 1200 HP, the down side of a rotary engine is the torque isnt there... with all that high horse power these engines arent the torquiest things. that would have to be a consideration- I know there is an adapter plate to bolt up to the 22r series of trannys, I am unable to find who make it right now.

I gotta be honest with you extreme, I think you should make two threads;

1: NON OEM Gas engine swaps

& 2: NON OEM Diesel swaps

They realy are two different things and to avoid confusion to the uneducated with opinion, someone can make up your mind as to there preferance and then see theire options :)

I have done two swaps, one a Small Block, Turbo 400, Dana 20, Ford 9"/ Toyota hybred rear. No kit & no swap parts were used.
Second was a 4.3 V6, Turbo 350 with an Advance Adapters Toyota Tcase , Toyota rear. Made my own motor mounts, relocated stock trans mount, used a diesel Toyota PU rad.
Overall i was happy with this swap but i got about the same gas mileage with the V8 but the V8 is WAY more fun!

I've got a '85 x-tra cab and swapt a 4.3 from a Silverado with a 700r tranny and advance adapters to hook up a Marlin Crawlers dual t-case kit. Its working great.

Also have a 1988 fj-62 with a Chevy LT1 700r and np205 t-case. All is good but the rear end cant handle the power, I've broke it twice. Now I'm trying a V8 Cruiser rearend. I'll let you know how it works.

my truck has a chev 383 stroker motor turbo 350 trans and NP 205t-case. used headers and motor mounts from northwest off-road. truck works great, but i would not do it again. i has way to much power and breaks s*** all the time. if i were to do it again i would do a T.B.I 4.3.

I have done 2 3.4l swaps and love driving them. My 4runner feels like it "should". My 1st truck is a 90 4runner and the donor was what was left of a 98 rolled 4unner. I supercharged it and did some fuel mods. This truck has too much power for stock drivetrain componets and I'm looking to upgrade the rearend to the bigger fj80 diff. The second truck I sold but was a great daily driver, it was stock with a stock 98 powerplant.

I got all my info and parts from Offroadsolutions.com for my 3.4l swaps.

I'm looking into doing a 4.0l in the 93 4runner i just got.

I've killed 5 4.56 diffs so far, junk yards around here are getting slim pickins. Swaps should stay below 250hp if you are going to run stock rear diffs.

put a 7MGE in this winter, first trail ride will be in a couple of weeks.

Exhuast was difficult, wiring messy, radiator clearance not good.

The fact that the motor bolts up to the factory motor mounts was a plus.

The motor is very smooth and quick reving. It will pull the truck in 5th with 37 tires and 488 gears. However, it is not a significant jump in power. If you are looking for big torque this is not the motor.

It is super quiet and I like quiet. You can barely hear the thing idle.

I will chime in after the trail ride.

Ive thought about putting one of these into a four runner. You can get brand new ones for 5000.00 and they will adapt to almost any transmission.

2.8 liter PowerStroke
Engine specs are:
2785 direct injection turbo diesel 4 cylinder
138 PS @ 3800 rpm
torque 277 ft/lbs @ 1400 rpm
Bosch VP14 (non electric)
Variable Geometry Turbo
Intercooled
2.8 liter Power stroke.webp

Posts: 160 Being a rover guy I know all about that engine. Look at paying just about 12K for it and all of the parts needed to put it in.

Cummins 4BT is alot more practical. Plus it can be serviced anywhere in america, compared to the 2.8

I have done:

84 xtra cab with a carb'd 4.3/Toy 5sp later to upgrade to a TH350, then put in a 350 carb'd engine, then upgraded to a 700r4. was getting 15 MPG with teh 350/700r4 combo with a 3" lift and 33's. Was my DD the whole time.

85 xtra cab with a carb'd 350 and a 700r4 for my brother. It got wrecked so we transferred all the running gear to a 85 4Runner.

Now I'm doin an 85 SC with a 02 4.3 and 700r4.

Love all the setups.....the V8's were hard to keep cool back then. Now living in AZ and old I will be hooking up A/C and everything. ;)

BTW the new rig will also be getting a D300 transfer case with twin sticks and the front and rear 60's from my old Willys Juggy. :D

Dude, that would be cool! That is a lot of torque for such a small engine...
