I thought your engine sounds like normal 2L-T diesel knock to me too. I do not know what a 3B sounds like.

I listened to my engine again with my laptop nearby so I could listen to your video: I could not hear much of a difference. And I could not reproduce anything with a metallic timbre.

NOTE: This morning early when it was near freezing I compared the sounds from your video to my LC again and I could not hear anything “metallic” or anything close to metallic when my cold engine idled. ‘

You have owned this car for 14 years, and only you would know how this “metallic” sound differs from any sound you have heard in the past.

Maybe other 2L-T owners can chime in to help you diagnose this problem. I hope so and wish you good luck. If you love your LJ70 as much as I do mine, this surely must be frustrating! Cheers

It is frustrating as I always try to give the best I can. I can be using it with this "issue" and if engine fails than swap it.... but not really the way I want to do it... I have been saving it for long time now. I will test the injection timing when the tool arrives and hope it will be bad timing and that will solve the issue.

You can immdiately check the alignment marks on the side of the pump. You can also try moving the pump as per the service manual to retard the timing a bit and see of that helps.

As part of the procedure you will need to disable the cold start device (ACSD) so you can already try that and see if it helps.

Also, check the exhaust manifold for cracks. Cracked manifolds (before the turbo) can make noises that sound like tapping.

Hello I can do check only over the weekends mostly as I have the landcruiser in weekendhouse so this will take a little more time.

I am collecting you comments and making a list for the weekend analysis😀

Hello

I am sending an update after the weekend :)

Unfortunately the tool for timing check of the pump did not arrive until weekend so this will be checked later.

But I found the marks were not aligned. It was quite difficult do loosen the nut by the engine, and then quite a hassle to rotate the pump. Took me a while but I managed to align it on marks. I did not drive it so I don t know if performance is somehow better or worse.

After assembly of the remaining parts, I tested it to see, if the tapping sound will change. It is still there, but I think it is not as intensive as before.
I even tried to warm up the engine to see if there will be any change - but it was still the same.

Then I tried to listen all over the engine with stethoscope and I suspect that it is Injectors or more injector as this tapping sound was most intensive on the second injector from firewall. The remaining three were also tapping but not that intensive.

Next step will be oil change to inspect the if there are not any metal shavings or so in the oil.

Good progress. It's normal for injectors to tap as they are spring-loaded valves. But if one is noisy, it could indicate improper operation. They are very simple things, so it should not cost much to get a diesel workshop to bench test, clean and recalibrate them.

Great progress.
Yes, rotating the pump is a tedious thing.
And it's all about fine-tuneing. Even the marks do not state the absolute correct position for all situations, as timing also depends on external influences such as hight. At the end it's all about 'make it run smooth'.
Go ahead as discussed. You are on the right track.
Good Luck Ralf

if you have never had the injectors serviced in your ownership it might be time. a bad spray pattern or dripping will make a bad noise while it's running.

So update after oil change... I did not know what to expect but all was good. Black oil without any metal shavings at all. I also flushed the engine.

So next thing will be the timing of pump when the tool arrives....and injectors check...

P.s In the meantime the alternator stopped charging🙃 so it will be rebuilt as well...

Good news with the oil. Rearding the alternator, good that you use the word 'rebuild'. Too many people make the mistake of replacing the original with a cheap new unit of much lower quality. Hopefully it just needs new brushes.

Hello,

unfortunatelly no updates nor progress. I got sick and did not have time and energy to make any progress on the car. And as I dont have it at home but on weekend house it makes it a bit more complicated to proceed with repairs. I just regret that I did not manage to take out injectors for testing in the meantime.

As soon as I will have some update I will post it here.

Thank you for your interest

Hi to all ,

update after weekend. Injectors are out for testing cleaning whatever will be needed after inspection. Plus rebult alternator in but I have prbelm with overcharging. Voltage regulator is toated and what is weird also the lamp in instrument cluster was broken..I had to replace it as well and fought little bit with the wiring. I will order new voltage regulator and hope one issue less to solve.

I wonder what the kind of information will I receive about injectors :)

I will keep you posted on the progress

At most in oz it is around $100-120 aud for a full rebuild of each, including a brand new denso nozzle. I shop around for a diesel specialist I like.
The fresh denso nozzles were around $60 each, last I looked. Which is quite marvelous value for the precision engineering involved. I mean beautiful how the pintle glides with gravity into the nozzle orifice. The precision is a key component to the glory of diesel. Good for 100k kms!
If unknown when the last time they were serviced and has pitting on the pintle house face or built carbon, it makes sense to just change them out and recalibrate.

Hi to all.

I have solved overcharging after rebuilt alternator was installed including new voltage regulator.

And what makes me even more happy is that there is no more tapping sound after installation of injectors👍 engine runs perfect now. Another min 15 years ahead of us with my LC70 😀

thank you all for support and I hope this thread will help someone who will experience similar problem like I have had.
