Too good of a deal?

Sooo I'm new to the 4runner world, my first car is a 95 fzj80 and I love it, but my friend got a new car and he said he would sell his 1987 4runner to me for $500. Power steering does need to be fixed and it has 287,000 on the original 22re... auto transmission, but I really want a manual, but is this father son project too much to get into?

If the truck is in good shape, $500 for a running 4Runner, even with an auto is a pretty good deal...
