I keep buying really expensive high quality canvas tarps. Canvas is a great material, being cotton. But, I keep loosing them to rot. The sun mostly. The fabric weaknens and then tears. I am repairing the tairs with Gorilla Tape which I will reinforce with hand stiching. Now, I make sure they are dried out before folding them up and storing. They came with some kind of oil impregnation which eventually dries out. So, my question is what, if anything, can I put on canvas tarps to preserve and protect them from sunlight?

I was thinking of spraying them with Linseed oil. Does anyone have experience with this?

I wouldn't use linseed oil unless you're ABSOLUTELY sure that the tarp won't be exposed to an ignition source.

The rags used to apply same will self-combust when crumpled up after use. Ask me how I know!

That's a really nice product, but expensive. We used an ACE Hardware product on our HUGE canvas hunting wall tent that we bought in a 5 gallon drum that was much more reasonably priced, field tested (in the rain, lots of snow:eek:, and sunshine), and wasn't flammable after application (embers from our stove tested that as well;)). I'll try and find the product name.

Linseed Oil + Cotton = Spontaneous Combustion

Superglue and cotton can also light itself.
