?? to all you 350, 700r4 to stock toyota transfer swap guys!

i've installed and sold a ton of these adapters and have never had any major issues. i thought the instructions were pretty good. they do have an "800" number if you have questions.............

the AA instructions are generic for FJ40's and FJ60's...even the "800" number person (left unnamed, but was very helpful to the extent he COULD help) didn't have a lot of info on doing FJ62 conversions.

for example:
-there's no template or instructions on fabbing up a rear crossmember, they just tell you: you'll have a hard time using the OEM one and the one that AA sells does not work very well (i've heard).
-the t-case shifter bracket does not work on the '62, it has to be modified and there are no instructions on that.
-these are just a couple of examples, we had plenty more questions on other stuff and were hard pressed to find answers for.

sorry for the tangent, can't wait to see you start tearing that thing apart!

update...

weeeell got my tranny back from the shop this weekend complete rebuild and changed the center shaft with the one that came with the AA kit:cool: + with a little improvemets :grinpimp:

it's a 700r4 K case :hhmm:, not sure what the main difference is between a normal 700r case... and the shift kit for better performance and longer life... i hope

update 2...

Last night i started toying around with the pieces from the AA kit and got the majority of the part together or at least were they fit… he he:grinpimp:

1.- I know the “square” O ring goes in between the 700r and the adapter.
2.- Seems that the darn round spacer slides on the spud shaft and goes on the bearing side and AA recommends putting RTV silicone to seal up the splines.
3.- Were does that plastic “thingy” (700R plastic washer) go?
4.- The oil seal (think it goes on the t-case input side).

Not sure if I got the transfer bracket on right, the pic on the AA instructions does not show the spacers so don’t know for sure how it goes, anyways from what xxfullsailxx has commented I will probably need to modify the bracket.

Sorry for all the NewB doubts but never done this before.

So here are some pics from what I have so far:

Hey xxfullsailxx did you need to use the front drive shaft kit that AA recommends to use for clearance on the tranny oil pan?

that's a pretty hefty shift kit for a dd. might be a little to firm, i would have recommended a softer kit.

1) yes
2) yes
3) chuck it, was included new with your trans rebuild
4) yes

the bracket looks to be in the right spot

no need for the special driveline, the split case allows for plenty of clearance for the oem driveline

the "k" case is a little stronger since it's thicker where the inspection cover for the torque converter attaches; it utilizes 6 threaded holes for machine screws instead of the 4 self tappers on the standard case. no other differences.

ps: make sure that the spud shaft is seated all the way in the bearing and that the bearing bottoms out in the adapter. the snap ring will stop it from going in too far. also, make very sure that the transmission output shaft is not bottoming out in the spud shaft. if it does, remove the required amount or you will have transmission problems in no time at all......

yep! what he said!

i had to shorten the output shaft by like a 1/2"...i used a cut off wheel and it went pretty easy. (another gripe for AA)

my front drive shaft is in and seems to clear!? i'll try to get a pic or two...i haven't flexed the suspension but initially it seems to work okay. i was looking at AA's clearance drive shaft as well hoping i wouldn't have to spend the money...

...and i wouldn't call it, "PLENTY of clearance" by any means.

thxs for all the help & tips:D!!

you guys have been a lot of help... :wrench:

yeah thats a heavy duty and firm shift kit, but it's not my DD hope it doesn't come back in bite me in the a$$:bang:

will do on the clearance between the tranny shaft and AA spud shaft don't want to "F" up nothing

yeah x2 on not wanting to cough up the money for the AA drive line kit:rolleyes:, but will tackle that issue when i get there...:meh:

maybe if your rig is lifted might give a little more room between the tranny and drive shaft dont know:hhmm:

RE: engine driven fan, what I'm running into is that the fan and the upper radiator hose want to be in the same space if the stock t-stat housing is used. Can go around the alternator to the rear and then come up outboard of it with the upper hose, but I've yet to find a t-stat housing that works. I'm guessing that the LT1, being reverse cooled, doesn't have a housing that would work for this but I'm off to the parts house to see what I can learn.

The LT1 t-stat housing doesn't help. I went through their pictorial catalog and picked out a list of possibles. I'll have to look at my notes, but one GM 4.3L V6 application fits pretty good, BUT welding will be required. Not an off the shelf solution.

the engine and wiring is from a 88 camaro irok z28:hillbilly: have the tranny also but no gonna use it on this swap!;)

this year engine has the MAF sensor on the front of the intake altough not shown in the picture, you cant use a mechanical fan because if this or its very difficult to use one:bang: the newer TPI engines use a speed density setup and do not have the MAf sensor on the front, dont know for sure but you could probably use a mechanical fan with the speed density or at least a very cool air filter like dyno!:p

Actually the intake air plumbing is only 1/2 of the battle in using a mechanical fan. That pesky upper radiator hose is the other battle.

I forget for the moment whether it is a 3" or a 4" (pretty sure it's the 3", but not positive) rubber hose or elbow will fit over the original throttle body's flange. I plan to use one and plumb over to an FJ62's air filter assembly (after also modifying it). If a diesel air filter lid or assembly could be found then you probably wouldn't need to make any alterations to the air filter can. There is no reason that I know of that you can't put the MAF sensor in that plumbing somewhere.
The problem with the filters set right on the throttle body is that the fan(s) throw hot air and dirt right at it.

I ran a mech fan on mine for a while, but i do not run the serp belt I run a v belt setup off of a 1988(or so) Police Caprice. I have been running an electric fan now for several years and don't have any overheating issues even in Barstow in August. it will run "hot" but not overheat when it is 110 and zero humidity.

I'm right there with you. Mine has been stalled since my last kid was born 3-11-10. Very little progress since then. Tomorrow morning he gets tubes put in his ears. It's been months and months of sick kids and no LC fun at all.

Update.... well sort of...;)

Just got a chance wrench on the 62 with my friends and made small progress, seems that the original tranny mount does not bolt up to the AA kit, already knew that got the heads up from xxfullsailxx a while back... but decided to wait and see what turn up... since just every other swap is a little bit different were going to try the stock fj60 mount and see whats next from there... heres the pic of the two mounts top is fj62 bottom is fj60... later guys!

by the way i will be trying to re use the stock crossmember...
Photo-1061.webp

Quick update...

it appears that the holes on the stock fj60 tranny mount do not line up to the AA adapter, it's about a 1/8" off :bang: this should be checked out by the AA guys and corrected... also the holes that bolt up to the FJ62 crossmember don't line up either but that i already knew... :censor:

will go back under the cruiser to mess around some more... update as we go along guys! later.

yeah project VJ62 is on slowww progress... but showing some minor progress.

but it's all good other wise

Quick update... right now trying to decide between exhaust manifolds... seems that the better solution is to go with the "rams horn" style stock headers... the other manifolds we got dont fit the bill clearance wise... Update as we go along later:meh:
